How do I make this hard drive docking station work on Windows 10?

I bought a Thermaltake Dual Hard Drive Docking Station. It’s the BlacXDuet. It was on sale and there was only one left so I thought it was a good idea.

Windows 10 doesn’t seem to recognize it though. I tried it on my laptop and desktop computer, which both have Windows 10. Nothing happens when I connect the docking station. I can’t access the hard drive I put into the docking station. It simply doesn’t show up anywhere. Device Manager shows an ”!” when I connect it and Device Manager also identifies it at something else -“JMicron SCSI Disk Device”

I then tried using the docking station on my work computer at my job – and it works perfectly. My work computer has Windows 7. That’s cool and all but – you know – I want this to work at home on my actual computer.

Device Manager in Windows 7 identifies the docking station as “JMicron USB Device”. That’s not how Windows 10 identifies it so I surmise that Windows 10 is just being stupid and I don’t know how to fix it.

-There’s no firmware to download for this device. Windows is supposed to install it on its own.

-I tried disabling/uninstalling and reinstalling/enabling the docking station through Device Manager but it ALWAYS freezes after I click to uninstall or disable it. My computer then gets weird. After I try disabling or uninstalling the docking station and then turn off my computer – it restarts instead. If I restart the computer then I get a Blue Screen of Death, stating a driver error. This is even when I disconnect the device.

-Tried Windows troubleshooting and it gave me some BS response that the device is not meant to be used in the USB 3.0 port. But it is. It’s a USB 3.0 device. It’s got the blue ports and stuff. I tried the USB 2.0 port anyway but still no luck. Tried every other USB port on my computer – nothing.

-I tried searching on other forums – shit out of luck with ideas.

This is really aggravating. This is a really useful device but Windows 10 seems to be getting in the way of me using it.

This is most likely the problem. You’re stuck in the middle and honestly no other troubleshooting is going to do much until that’s sorted.

Here’s a possible solution, it’s just a specific order of doing the uninstall, but maybe it will help.

I’d get that sorted, then get in touch with Themaltake, they may have a solution, or if you need a replacement, can get that started.

It seems to be a common problem on this device, and the Thermaltake community page doesn’t seem to have any answers.

That is probably why it was on sale.

Ah fuck it. I’m just gonna return it. I spent like the past hour trying to figure it out. I thought I was going to go somewhere with @funkdaddy ‘s result but still didn’t get anywhere.

That’s odd. USB is usually so simple.

It’s probably much easier to buy a new device, but if you want to try something else, you could run a Win7 or Linux virtual machine and see if it can access the drive.

Windows 10 Pro can run VMs under Microsoft Hyper Visor. For Windows 10 Home, Virtualbox and (I think) VMWare Player will work.
