Fellow artists of Fluther: How often do you practice the fundamentals of art?

Asked by rockfan (14627points) May 29th, 2018 from iPhone

Or do you prefer to dive in and unleash your creativity with abandon? I’ve noticed from going to local art exhibits that many artists forgo learning the basics. Personally, I’m neutral on the subject. What’s your opinion?

Practicing fundamentals can mean excercises, warm up activities, prepratory sketches, moquettes, and meditative/mindset activities. But it is also the use color theory, composition, and technique in a finished work.
Even wildly expressive art is informed by experience. The brushmark feels intuitive, but there is technique and decision-making involved. Which brush? Which angle? How much to load the brush? Soft edge or hard edge?
By forgo the basics, are you meaning art that feels amateur? Often it lacks contrast and depth, or objects are rendered poorly.

No time for that.

I draw what I see and feel and try to convey that by emphasis on parts to highlight in both drawing and in my photographs.Perspective art which is very analytical and thus I find kills the
creative idea . Before rules of art were applied people drew or painted as they wished.
I understand centering a photograph off center to make it more interesting but I don’t always follow that rule.
In all art, photography etc it is often the one who does their own creative idea outside rules that gets noticed. Even in writing same thing.
Be creative express yourself using your own way of doing it ,after all it is YOUR way not the mass productions to please others that comes out stronger and long lasting and stands out. That is what creativity is all about your individual take on life expressed in and by your way.
I remember in writing creative stories in class all those years told that I had too many run on sentences , something that was frowned upon and guess what? Now that is what stands out from the rest to become the famous series “Outlander” by Diana Gabaldon and also Paul Aster who use lots of run on sentences in their popular worldwide books.
So do your own thing it will stand out from the mundane works of sheep that blindly follow rules that in turn will generate a dullness in being the same. Stand out be different and be recognized for your uniqueness.
