How can I find a death record with little information?

Asked by midnight_nightwatcher (4points) July 13th, 2018

I’m trying to find death records of a specific person. This information was passed down for over 100 years, so some might be flawed. Her first name was Claire, her mother was born in Scotland and her father in Ireland. She had an older sister, but I’m not sure of any other siblings, there’s speculation of a brother but I wouldn’t include that in the search. I have reason to believe that they lived in England at some point and most likely Ireland and Scotland, but I’m unsure. She was born 1800 or later and died 1899 or before, being alive in the Victorian era (but it’s unknown for how long) and she was under 30 when she died. She was never married, her mother died before her and she died before her father, being stabbed in the stomach or back. I also know how she roughly looked like, but I don’t believe they had records of hair and eye colours. There are some stories and details I know of her life, but they most likely wouldn’t be in records. Is there any way of finding her records?

Do you have a last name and the parish where they lived in England? If not, I think it would be impossible to trace her yourself; the details are too sketchy. If you do have those, you could contact the department of records for where she lived. If not, a genealogist could probably help you for a fee.

If you know where she was killed, there could be newspaper articles available in a research library about the murder. Again, I think you have to have a little more data than you are giving here.

A quick search of Ancestry for people named Claire who died in the UK between 1840 & 1860 found a total of 17,154 records. . Need a little more information to narrow it down. You need a surname of her, her father, her mother, someone would be a start. Also helpful, where she died, where she was born, when father and mother died.

Also did a general Census search for someone named Claire:
for the 1800’s there are 7,145,218 records in various registers and census forms for the United Kingdom.
Best of luck to you.

The statutory registers of births marriages and deaths in Scotland began in 1855 and these records can be found on the ScotlandsPeople website.

Before this records were kept by parish ministers but these are less detailed and are incomplete. Some are listed on the ScotlandPeople website. It would be worth checking alternative spellings of the name Claire and if you know her surname it would be a big help.

It’s another long shot but the Proceedings of the Old Bailey are now online. If the murder case was held in London you might find it there.

On FB there is a website group called: Genealogy Addicts UK and Worldwide Research Group.
These are researchers that are experts that volunteer their time to assist people such as yourself in locating information.
Suggestion: place all info that you have on that relative in point form as it makes easier and organized information to refer too , for others who are trying to help you. Give this site a try as I have been successfull in the past with this group as well.
