Can a dog have fleas and not scratch?

Asked by MooCows (3216points) July 31st, 2018

Husband says my dog has fleas but we never see her scratch and she stays in the house 90% of the time. I also give her baths.
I haven’t seen fleas on her. What’s your take?

If you bathe her with a flea shampoo and there are not dead fleas in the bath tub then; the conclusion would be maybe no.
If you give her Frontline Plus or NexGard the answer would NO fleas or ticks.

My first dog had tons of fleas, but only scratched certain locations. I found that cheap flea shampoos would only knock out the fleas during the bath. They would wake up and jump back on when they dried off. (We bathed the dog in the backyard.)

Have you seen any fleas on your dog, or elsewhere in the house? Why does your husband say your dog has fleas if the dog isn’t scratching and you haven’t seen any fleas? Is your dog having any other symptoms of allergies or anything like that?

Because I have some small red spots on me that itch and he thinks it is fleas since my dog sleeps in bed sometimes..but I seldom see her scratch and she gets bathed regularly as she is a small dog.

Maybe the red spots on your skin do not relate to fleas in your dog. Did you eat some food that leads to allergy? Try to isolate your dog from the bed and disinfect the sheet completely. If you don’t have the spots again, that may really relate to its fleas.

@MooCows could it be bedbugs ?
