Why is clothing on the list of Maslow's pyramid basic hierarchy of needs?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24473points) October 14th, 2019

Food and shelter I get, but why clothing? I just used that as an excuse motivation to buy winter clothes , and basics (xxl socks, xxl underwear , and xxl t-shirts).

I am happy and thankful that I spent my life savings on good winter clothes and not wasted on luxuries. Like a dating membership and D&D online gaming accounts.

I don’t see it there. There is a line for physiological needs and above that safety needs, either of which could include clothing but I don’t see it specifically mentioned.

@janbb The link answered much of my questions. All that is left is to move my question to social and have an open discussion. It was the first link that I received when I Googled
“Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Clothes”. I am sated for now.
I grew up with the saying “Food, clothing and shelter”, where the basics for humans.

To getaway from debating, (because you know @janbb is right, and your google search gave you what you wanted not what you needed), clothes are a basic physiological neeed, even with the most primitive societies where people wear loin-cloths.

If anything, it can protect your bare ass from thorns and splinters.

@RedDeerGuy1 You are the guy who lives in Red Deer, and you can’t answer this question yourself?

@Zaku Just wanted a gold star for buying clothes instead of wasting on useless crap. Like memberships on Dungeons & Dragons, dating sites, and midnight spending sprees on online shopping for things I want and don’t need.
I requested that this question be put in social.

@Zaku Oh you meant winter clothing. I’m prepared for winter now. I have two winter jackets and warm hat and neck warmers , and two pairs of winter gloves. I could use more winter sweaters. I have my basic needs met now.
I am great as long as my zipper on my winter coats doesn’t crap out on me.

Because its a need.

Yeah, I meant in terms of Maslow’s pyramid per the question.

Clothing is very helpful for reducing health problems due to exposure to cold weather, sunburn, and other hazards. And unless and until the culture converts to nudism, there are major societal needs around clothing, too.
