Which foods cause kidney stones?

Asked by BrentFoust (16points) December 4th, 2019

I used to experience pain in lower back and on sides occasionally. Blood was also seen in urine. I was diagnosed with kidney stones. What might have caused kidney stones? Are some foods responsible for causing kidney stones.

I’m not a doctor. You should talk to your doctor about it, they might have a list for you. Did you pass the stone? Or, it’s just hanging out in your kidney?

It partly depends on what the stones are made from, a lot of times it’s calcium.

Drink plenty of liquids (water is best of course) and avoid dark sodas. Dark colas have high phosphate content, which is bad for the kidneys, the phosphates also inhibit mineral absorption.

Avoid too much intake of high oxalate foods. You need to google for this to get a full list. A whole bunch of things on the list are considered healthy by most diets so it’s a frustrating list.

Don’t consume excessive amounts of calcium.

Make sure your vitamin D level is good (get a blood test) so the calcium is going into your bone and not soft tissues and organs. Excessive D intake is thought to increase risk of kidney stones, so like I said, get a test, don’t just guess.

Avoid high salt and very high protein in your diet.

When I was in my 20’s I developed kidney stones because I was taking far too much multivitamins and minerals and not drinking enough water.

Urologist told me to stop taking the vitamins, drink more water and “eat a normal diet”.

I peed out 3 large kidney stones and thousands of sand size stones. I’m 68 now and never developed anymore kidney stones.

Good health.
