Is the optimum shape for resonsance always bell-shaped?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) January 8th, 2020

The material being used for my wind chime project is stoneware clay.
I know that vitrification, size, thickness and type of clay all factor in to what type of sound one will get when it is struck but what other shapes outside of a bell might give a decent sound?

No, some can be tubed? Instruments create resonance Some are tubes like clarinet, flute. This article says that organ pipes create columns of air in the pipe that create resonance

Drums create it as well

@SergeantQueen -I have seen demos on ocarinas and clay flutes. I haven’t tried to make those yet.
A drum shape might be interesting as well as the tube shapes.
Thank you for the ideas!

Vibraphone and xylophone come to mind.
Does Those are metal or wood blocks.

Or are we talking something completely different here?

@rebbel I think @lucillelucillelucille is looking for wind chime ideas, and the things you listed are used as wind chimes (The wood/ metal blocks) So that fits!!

@SergeantQueen -The link you posted made me think of Tesla.

@rebbel -I have a clay that sounds nice when rung. I might just try some flat pieces to see how it sounds.
Today, I made some clay fortune cookies and will see if they have a good tone after firing. :)

Ah, sorry, I ‘missed’ the clay part of your question…

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@rebbel-That’s alright. thin rectangles of varying lengths and thicknesses would produce different sounds.
If I made a keyboard/windchime, would the wind eventually play this?
Would I have to wait for a breezy day or would I have to wait for a group of chimps to stop over after they get done typing out some Shakespeare? :)

No. The exhaust system on a car has a certain resonance.

@kritiper -I should have specified pleasing…although that is subjective. :)

You want pleasing? Here’s one that pleased certain people:
One of my Diesel mechanics college instructors was once called out to a stationary Detroit Diesel engine that was making extremely loud exhaust noise. After the engine was thoroughly checked out, the muffler was looked at, but found to be in good condition. So he shinnied up the exhaust stack with a hack saw and began cutting off 6” sections of exhaust pipe until, at one point, the noise reduced to a most satisfactory level.

Anything symmetrical, like a cone, cylinder, bell, vase or any empty vessel like me that makes the most sound with delightfully dulcet consonance and mellifluous euphony.

Here’s a thought BublĂ© of clay bells in the know

@kritiper- How many decibels is satisfactory?

kritiper's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille However many it takes to make people either bitch or stop bitching.

Spiral tube? Shaped like a corkscrew. Would it sound different struck at different places?
