Why do we have to say Good Morning at the workplace?

Asked by VicVic707 (48points) August 22nd, 2020

Iam not a morning person, never was, never will be. Why do we have to greet others with Good Morning? Why is it considered rude to say hello or just smile or nod? I rather someone just smile or not even look my way. Sounds childish yes but im serious…alot of the time I want to just be able to walk into work and go straight to my desk but I end up having to respond to others when I dont even feel like it. and most of the time you can tell they don’t want to say it either…whats wrong with “fuck off” Id love that greeting!

I love that idea. “Hey good morning” “fuck off”

No, but seriously, I never say Good morning to my coworkers. We always just say Hey. That’s it. Not sure why people think we have to. It’s not rude to just say hello.

Common courtesy?

I think it’s a matter of the culture of a particular workplace.

Don’t worry, if you start giving rude answers, it’ll stop. At least until you leave there.

People will say how are you today, and I reply I’m alive.
They tend to leave me alone after that.

I don’t think there’s any law that says you “have to say Good Morning”. But it sounds nice. Say whatever you want. Hey, hi, hello. I wouldn’t ignore anyone though by not saying anything at all. You have to work with people all day. It pays to have some manners.

It is the courteous, civilized thing to do.

I don’t say good morning. I say “hi” to some, “what’s up” to others. Always with a smile. There’s no law that says it has to be good morning but you should greet your coworkers in the morning. It’s just courteous. If you come in and don’t give some type of greeting, you may be seen as antisocial, grumpy, weird or a worker with a bad attitude.

Having a malcontent in the workplace can be toxic for your team and lead to a cascade of HR problems with good employees wanting to leave. Grow the fuck up and understand that acting civilly to your coworkers is also part of what you’re being paid to do.

I’ve never been sure if “good morning” was a way of greeting, a way of wishing someone to have a good morning, or if you are trying to convince yourself.

Go ahead and tell your coworkers to fuck off. But don’t be surprised when you ask them for help to tell you to go fuck yourself.

I can’t stand it either.
A nod or a “hey” should suffice.
Saying “good morning” implies there’s something positive and happy to it when that’s clearly not the case. I’m here to collect my table scraps for rent so why do I have to pretend to be happy?

You don’t have to say, “Good morning”. Hello, howdy, hey, what-it-is are all acceptable.

What I never liked was when someone asked, “How are you?”. I’m feeling crappy with little sleep and a pounding headache but I have to pretend that I’m feeling terrific. I got good at that. “How are you?”. Marvelous simply marvelous!

Employers want you to be overly happy just to have a job, even if they pay and treat you like crap.

No good reason not to say Good Morning. (it may rub off on you)
