Here is an odd question about having an untouchable sofa for guests only, why?

Asked by Inspired_2write (14486points) September 10th, 2020

Visited my friend in his apartment a while back and he only had one sofa a recliner,a huge TV and a coffee table in his living room nearby a nice rectangle tasteful table and chairs and that was all!
He told me that he had the sofa for ONLY visiting guests and he won’t even sit on it himself?
He denies his own comfort for others,it looks like?

Is that normal?
Isn’t this archaic?

@Inspired_2write Maybe he doesn’t want to spread cooties? Certain cultures save the best for guests. Or the good tea set for the queen.

Yeah OK during the Pandemic I suppose but kind out outdated practices otherwise.

It gives me the impression that he is not here for the long term, like someone who is planning on skipping town in a hurry or something?

My parents had a couch in the living room that was reserved “only for company”. As a child I remember thinking it was very fancy. We kids never sat on it.

It’s old school, but fairly normal around here. One formal parlor kids weren’t allowed in that was always clean and nice, regardless of what happened in the rest of the house. My auntie had a room like that and all I was allowed to do was sit and watch tv while they visited.

That’s also where she kept the weird hard candy in a dish that was nasty.

But here is the oddity about this neighbor….HE HAS NO OTHER SOFA.

So WHY won’t HE sit in it?

Are others MORE important then HIM?

IS impressing OTHERS MORE important than living an authentic life?

That is what I find odd and difficult to accept.

@Inspired_2write If he’s alone there, perhaps he’s like many people and just prefer the recliner? My husband doesn’t sit on any other furniture…haha!

Why not? Perhaps it’s the “cootie” couch, and he wants to restrict the bugs to a single piece of furniture.

Sounds like he was raised with formal and informal furniture. It wasn’t unusual, back in the day, to have a “Formal living room,” as well as an informal family room.

If he’s using the recliner he isn’t sacrificing his comfort.

My recliner is the only place I ever sit. Nothing strange about that. I don’t even own a sofa.
In my mother’s house the sofa was kept covered with plastic except when company came and we weren’t allowed to sit on it. She also had plastic runners on the floors which we rolled up when visitors came.

One time my dad got a new car. He had the back seats covered in clear plastic. It hurt like he’ll in the summer time when you wore shorts!

I don’t blame him. I’d sit only on the recliner too. It’s probably much more comfortable than the sofa is.

God, I miss having a recliner.

@Darth_Algar Office of Senior Aging gives them free to seniors here, maybe check in your area? They are new lift chairs, too.

@KNOWITALL

Heh. I might be getting old but I’m not quite at senior age yet. Besides, the main issue is an issue of space in my house. I’d have to rearrange my entire living room, possibly other rooms in the house (to fit in things that might no longer fit in the living room) and I’m way too lazy for that. Plus, furniture arraignment is more @anniereborn’s call anyway.

@Dutchess_III OMG! My grandparents had a Rambler with no air conditioning and clear plastic with triangular bumps which left an imprint on the backs of my hot, sweaty legs every summer! Too funny!

My son many years ago had a TV room with two sofas and club chair, one of the sofas was Cesar’s; his 145 pound Great Dane but he would share it. When you sat on his sofa it meant he could put his chin on you lap, he usually left his hind feet on the floor and the rest draped across the sofa.

@Tropical_Willie Awwww…so sweet! I had a therapist who brought her Golden Retriever to work with her every day. I would sit on the soft, worn-in love seat and he’d climb up next to me. It was very soothing when I’d talk about upsetting things. There was also a comfortable chair where someone could sit if they didn’t want to share with him.

@Darth_Algar I’d be happy to rearrange our crappy furniture to include a new recliner. Don’t think that’s gonna happen tho.
