What inflation or food shortages have you noticed?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24472points) February 23rd, 2022

Beef ribs have doubled in price in my area. Everything else seems ok.

How are your stores?

At a resturaunt waffles were $9.00 for ONE waffle.

Food prices have gone through the roof, helping a friend he said he would buy lunch, a bacon cheese burger with fries $23 and that didn’t include a drink.

Chestnut's avatar

None, really. Last grocery trip was about the same as all the recent rest. Not award of shortages, at least nothing on my usual list.

flutherother's avatar

I haven’t noticed any shortages but I go early to my local supermarket after the overnight re stocking. I haven’t noticed much inflation but packets of celery have recently been sold with the celery already topped and tailed. I think this is a ploy to hide an increase in price.

janbb's avatar

Haven’t noticed any huge jumps but I don’t buy much meat or or do big shops. Gas has been more expensive.

rebbel's avatar

@flutherother (Some) Dutch people break/tear off excess leafage, and dump them in waste baskets, before they weigh their cauliflower, cabbages, what have you.
Under the motto “why would I pay for the junk that I’ll will cut off and throw when I’m at home?”......

flutherother's avatar

@rebbel I would do that too but most vegetables in my local supermarket aren’t sold loose but are pre packaged.

KRD's avatar

Colorado prices are to high. We have to pay $1.39 a gallon of milk.

rebbel's avatar

@flutherother Now that you mentioned it, yeah, same here.

filmfann's avatar

Gas prices, which causes everything else to jump.

smudges's avatar

@KRD Are you serious?! $1.39 for a gallon?? Are you sure?? Milk here is $3.something at Walmart. And it just went up at my favorite convenience store to $5.69, up from $4.99!!

Dutchess_III's avatar

I know, right @smudges?
Where do you live @KRD?

smudges's avatar

^^He said he’s in Colorado. But I’m not sure he meant a gallon. What was it before it went up? 0.69 cents?!

Chicken wings are twice as expensive as boneless skinless chicken thighs (skin and bones and not much meat on wings) twice the price. GO FIGURE !

Some shortages around here (South Bay area). Paper goods supplies have mostly come back, but various food items are just missing, either intermittently or altogether. Meat case supplies are low. Certain pastas are unavailable. Some products have apparently suspended production (e.g., my favorite soda, Diet Rite cola). I hear often, “I don’t know. We keep ordering it, but it doesn’t come into the warehouse.” Others are spotty. In general, there’s just a level of unpredictability that contributes to an overall feeling of uncertainty and stress.

As has always been the case, even in North Korea, if you have the right connections and can pay, I’m sure you don’t have to put up with such annoyances. I doubt that patrons of high-ticket restaurants, for example, are suffering much deprivation.

YARNLADY's avatar

There are several items each time we order, (it changes from time to time), bananas, cantaloupe, bacon, potatoes, frozen burritos, double price of eggs, and $3.20 for a gallon of milk, today.

nightwolf5's avatar

Lot of things, but especially, produce, dairy, and frozen foods. This year is really spendy on stuff.

JLeslie's avatar

I think part of the recent gas prices going up is Presidents’ Day weekend and week. Just like Thanksgiving weekend, Memorial Day weekend, and Labor Day weekend.

The supermarkets where I live are running low or out of some items by the end of the day, but shelves used to get somewhat wiped out this time of year even before covid. The closest Publix supermarket to me supposedly was doing the most volume per square foot in the state when I moved here 6 years ago. Now, there are more supermarkets, but also more people, so it still might be.

What runs out varies. Sometimes it’s skim milk, sometimes a certain type of cheese, sometimes certain types of bread. Powerade and Gatorade zero have been running out of some flavors. Some packaged salads run out in the evening. I couldn’t get my Newman’s raspberry walnut vinaigrette for over a month. I just bought ginger dressing instead.

I usually shop at night, so I don’t always get everything on my list. I order curbside for late morning or afternoon. I get at least 85% of my list, often I get everything or just one item short.

I just buy what I find and wait for the next trip if I didn’t find something. No panic.

Wait until next week Putin will drive our price for gas and oil up by 30% or more.

Trump’s best friend FOREVER !

And the rich just keep getting richer and richer, ain’t greed a wonderful thing?

In our Town and others I observe that all unhealthy foods are flying off the shelf.
Why is that, it’s because that is all that mid to lower income people can afford, since
all meat, poultry and fish have doubled in costs.

I learned a technique that seems to work for me when shopping for groceries and that is, onceI purchase a meat, poultry, fish product at a normal price and the next week or two
after it is doubled..it is then that I simply stop buying it.

I keep watch as the the days go by and eventually that price will lower in order for that
grocery store to profit before its get bad.

I talked with my friend in the grocery business and he stated that the stores HAVE to get
rid of food before it expires and in order to have shelf space available for the new shipments
every week.

Therefore to make room for the newer shipments they thus have to put those on sale and that is the perfect time when I purchase it.

Btw lately I get Marie Callenders Beef & Broccoli Bowls ( and other varities avaialble) at $5.49 (CDN $) and that is enough for supper meals for me, instead of going broke on pricy meats etc at this time.

I think if the media (including every day people on social media) stopped talking about shortages there would be fewer shortages, and where there was some shortages people would barely notice if it’s just temporary for a week or two.

Confirmation bias is at play, people are focusing on it, they make scarcely of cream cheese for a few weeks into the sky is falling and they might never be able to buy cream cheese again. People are also hoarding a little on items they are told are short, which creates a bigger shorter.

We are being manipulated.

RocketGuy's avatar

Take out food has gotten pretty steep here in N Cal. Groceries went up less.

smudges's avatar

@JLeslie I can see that – it’s like it almost gives them a pass to increase prices.

KRD's avatar

Sorry about the confusion. The actual price for a gallon of milk is $6 to $10.

smudges's avatar

@KRD Ohmigod!! That’s worse than here and outrageous! Suppliers are ‘milking’ us! ;D

Tropical_Willie's avatar

High test gas (93 octane) national chain just hit $4.44.9 ! I have one car will only run on 91 or higher octane.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@Tropical_Willie our gas in B.C just hit $6.49 a us gallon.
and that is for regular.

nightwolf5's avatar

@KRD I can maybe see $6 for a gallon of Milk, but more than that or up to $10, I’ve not seen. What store, or kind of milk are you getting?

KRD's avatar

@nightwolf5 I get most of the milk at King Supers. We live in Colorado which is a expensive state to live in.

flutherother's avatar

Gas (petrol) prices have gone up to $9.24 per gallon here in the UK.
Milk is selling at $3.08 for a gallon of semi skimmed.

rebbel's avatar

Do you use gallons in the UK, @flutherother?

JLeslie's avatar

^^Imperial gallons, so it’s more liquid than an American gallon.

flutherother's avatar

Petrol is sold by the litre and milk by the pint. I converted both to gallons, but not American gallons as @JLeslie pointed out.
Gas prices are $11.09 per American gallon
Milk prices are $3.7 per American gallon.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Shit!!! I thought we Canadians were taking gas prices up the butt, we are paying $6.27 for a us gallon here in B.C.

RocketGuy's avatar

We have it good here in the US, at least for gas prices.

JLeslie's avatar

@flutherother I think you did the math incorrectly. American gallon is smaller. Should be less expensive than an Imperial gallon.

$9.24/4.55=$2.03 a liter.

$2.03×3.79=$7.69 a US gallon.

Unless, I’m calculating incorrectly. Totally possible I’m so tired right now. Check my math. Still very high compared to the states.

Is that organic milk? That milk price isn’t bad.

flutherother's avatar

@JLeslie I think you are right. Gas in the UK works out at $7.69 per US gallon which is still pretty dear compared with North America. Milk is $2.60 in the supermarkets which is cheaper . That isn’t organic milk, just semi skimmed.

JLeslie's avatar

@flutherother The milk price is good, not expensive. It’s closer to $3.50 and $4.00 here. Is that using an Imperial gallon also? I know for weight the UK still sometimes uses the old system, like still referring to stones and pounds rather than the metric, although I assume that’s changing over time, but for liquid is everything imperial gallon, both beverages and gasoline? I can barely lift an American gallon of milk without hurting my back.

Where I live gas is $3.40 a US gallon, but other parts of the states it’s probably a dollar more, some places 50¢ less. Each state has local taxes and different access to refineries. So, when people blame Biden for $4 California gas prices, really we need to look around the country to the lowest price also in my opinion, because so much of the price might be local expenses and requirements. From what I understand California requires some sort of special processing.

RocketGuy's avatar

Calif blend gas needs extra processing steps, etc. to generate fewer pollutants when burned: http://www.afdc.energy.gov/pdfs/3002.pdf
That adds cost to the product.
