When Jesus comes back what loose ends in "The Bible", would you like to be resolved?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24463points) May 11th, 2022

Like abortion for and against, permitting homosexuality, freedom of religion or non-religion? Allowing divorce? Details of the Constitution in different countries?

What other loose ends are in the bible?

Abortion is mentioned in the Bible??

God laid down his !0 Commandments, then Jesus comes along and says if you believe in him, all sins will be forgiven. Who the hell is the boss up there?? And ALL sins will be forgiven? What the hell was Jesus smoking??

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

Abortion is mentioned in the Bible?? No… that is why it is a loose end.

kritiper's avatar

Then EVERYTHING is a loose end! Including the Bible itself.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@kritiper Yes then… what are the highlights that stand out for you?

kritiper's avatar

I don’t have the time to write ALL of them out.

Abortion is in the bible. It tells you how to do it.
Specifically, it tells you that if you suspect a woman of cheating, you force her to drink a potion that causes a miscarriage.
Numbers 5:11–31

@ragingloli Thanks for the fact check.

@ragingloli Hmm. Interesting. Though it seems it was just holy water which is water with salt or oil and it calls for a curse for the woman to miscarry and be forever barren if she was unfaithful and her stomach to swell and if she was pure that it would not hurt her. It seems like this was more some voodoo crap to get free barley from the jealous spouse.
But it does make one thing clear. If a priest could bless the idea of abortion for some barley, then that means it wasn’t considered murder back then.

Of course, Christian are supposed to follow the New Testament, with the exception of the 10 commandments. Jesus was suppose to set the example on how to live.
Think of the old testament like the dial-up phone and Jesus like the new Galaxy 10 ( Or whatever updated phone we have now) phone.
But it is still interesting considering many nuns had abortions when they got pregnant in the past and you know that was Vatican approved.

Definately His take on those issues, but I’m especially interested in the homosexuality issue. I have stuck up for Him against many people over the years. Preachers on the pulpit speaking in His name are cringe.

@Pandora It says Jesus came to abolish the old laws, absolutely.

I think the world could stand to hear a lot more “love thine neighbor as thy self” (even if they have brown skin) and “whoever is without sin, cast the first stone.”

I think conservatives would be surprised to find out that Jesus 2.0 isn’t a big fan of firearm ownership.

I’d also be interested to hear his thoughts on the gnostic gospels, whether Paul was actually touched by God, or just a dude with mental illness, and how accurate the New Testament was.

I think many of the questions posed have answers in the bible.

Abortion for or against: Many passages deal with this idea. Matthew 18:10 for example: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven

permitting homosexuality: Leviticus 18:22–24 22 “ ‘Do not have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable. 23 “ ‘Do not have sexual relations with an animal and defile yourself with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to have sexual relations with it; that is a perversion. 24 “ ‘Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled.

Freedom of religion or non-religion: This one has several aspects. From the 10 Commandments: Commandment 1 I am the LORD your God, which have brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me. Commandment 3 You shall not make unto you any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: You shall not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; And showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my Commandments. Then we get into the idea of not believing in him (please note that Jesus did not support any given religion) Matthew 17:17 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.

Allowing Divorce: Matthew 5:32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. Matthew 19:6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.” Corinthians 7:10–11 To the married I give this charge (not I, but the Lord): the wife should not separate from her husband (but if she does, she should remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband), and the husband should not divorce his wife.

I don’t understand the question about the Constitution in other nations. There are discussions in the bible concerning man’s government though. Matthew 22:15–22 Then the Pharisees went and plotted how to entangle him in his words. And they sent their disciples to him, along with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances. Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.

Each of these questions has many other answers throughout the bible. These are not loose ends. They are usually things that secular folks do not like about the bible.

What is the proof that there was a Jesus, and if there was, that he’s ever coming back?

The Bible doesn’t say much about pollution and environmentalism. I hope this is put right when the revised edition comes out.

seawulf575's avatar

@flutherother
Genesis 2:15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

Genesis 1:26–30 _ Then God said, “Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.”_
So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; female and female he created them. God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.” God said, “See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so.

Can’t get much better than that at addressing pollution and environmentalism. If you are given dominion over something you have complete authority over it. But with that comes complete responsibility for it. God gave us everything we needed to survive and to thrive. We just had to use it smartly. I’d say we haven’t.

@smudges considering there weren’t great records back in the day, establishing a genealogical history to prove Jesus was real is a bit difficult. But think about this for a moment. The bible is an epistolary book. It is made up of books, histories, letters etc that were written down by a variety of people. These writings have been verified to have been generated over hundreds of years. Even the apostles didn’t sit down as a group to write their stories of Jesus. They were generated over quite a few decades. Yet the stories, older and newer, hold together quite well. The alternative would be that hundreds of years before Christ someone wrote a book of fiction. Others over the centuries wrote sequels, so to speak, to build on the story, all with the goal of getting to Jesus being born, living, dying, and rising again. That seems even more far-fetched than the idea Jesus was real.

Another thing that is odd is that an enormous number of churches formed up in different areas all based on the teachings of a person named Jesus. These churches grew very close in time to when Jesus is said to exist. If Jesus were made up, it was an awfully quick forming and extremely believable story that spread extremely quickly. Possible, I guess, but I find it questionable. It makes much more sense if Jesus actually had lived and his exploits spread as he was doing them.

@seawulf575 The same could be said of santa claus

flutherother's avatar

@seawulf575 Having dominion over every living thing is not environmentalism and if God wanted us to respect and behave responsibly towards the environment He should have said so. He gave us power but didn’t tell us how that power should be used. If we are now becoming environmentalists it isn’t because of the Bible, but science.

seawulf575's avatar

@smudges Really? Where are the written histories of Santa Claus? Were they written over a thousand years and tell a complete tale? Were churches created to celebrate SC?

seawulf575's avatar

@flutherother Look at the first statement I quoted. God gave man the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. All the rest indicates that He gave us dominion over the world so that it could take care of us. As with all things associated with Man, however, we screwed it up. We took the idea that we were in charge but neglected the responsibility that went with that.
