How can I help my friend get rehired and get his job back?

Asked by JohnCooper321 (7points) September 9th, 2022

I have a friend. Let’s just say his name is Josh (fake name). We are both into our culture and heritage. We live in the United States but have European ancestry. I am not racist but I suspect that Josh is. We both worked at the dollar store and the former manager was Caucasian. Josh was an efficient worker and he was cool with the manager. The manager eventually transfered to another store and he was replaced with an African American manager. Me and the other employees didn’t care. At first I didn’t think Josh had a problem but I noticed his energy dropped and he had a sour face most of the time. It seemed like he didn’t like the thought of taking orders from an African American because when the manager told him to do something Josh often responded with an attitude. Everything the new manager told him to do he did the opposite or he did it inefficiently. I noticed that his work rate dropped. When the manager told him to put 4 boxes of merchandise on the shelves he only did 2. (He always used to finish stocking boxes. Now it is rare when he finishes.) He is no longer friendly to customers. He is cold like a robot. He always complains about the new manager even though he’s not better or worse than the previous manager. One day we had an inspection and Josh purposely came late. ( I know because he drop me off on time but he left and came back 40 minutes later so he was 40 minutes late.) When the manager asked him why he was late he said that his car broke down. While we were cleaning for the inspection he was cleaning slowly and purposely using too much bleach to clean the floor. When the manager question him on the bleach amount Josh lied and said it was a mistake. I know he lied because he did it again in the bathroom. Josh was supposed to have a thirty minute lunch break but he took an hour off. When the manager questioned him Josh said that he fell asleep by accident. (Josh lied. I went in and out the room to get supplies several times and saw him awake on his phone. The next day Josh was purposely late again. The manager questioned him. Josh told the manager that he was late because he put his clothes in the washing machine at the Landry mat but he didn’t realize how close it was to work starting time. He had to wait for the clothes to wash and dry because he didn’t want to leave because someone might steal the clothes. (Josh could’ve avoid it because before he took me to work he stopped at the laundry mat. I told him that he should was his clothes after work because starting is only ten minutes away. He ignored me. He dropped me off at work and went back to the laundry mat.) Eventually I asked Josh if he was racist and he told me know. One fateful day Josh saw the manager walking out a few boxes of frozen food. Josh chased the manager down and accused the manager of stealing. Josh was aggressively talking to the manager until the manager showed Josh the receipt. After that the manager cut Josh’s hours down from 25 to 30 to 3 to 4. Soon the manager didn’t put him on the schedule at all. Josh attempted to get in contact with the manager to put him back on the schedule but the manager never replied. Josh was forced to quit but he didn’t have luck finding another job. He constantly ask me for money and he wants me to help him get his old job back. How can I help him get his job back?

He needs to find a different career!

You can’t. You might explain to Josh that he was a fool to believe he should abuse his job and your boss simply because he’s black. Have you asked your friend why he behaved in a way guaranteed to get him fired?

HP's avatar

@Tropical Willie what career can you think of that does not involve interaction with black people? Perhaps the proud boys ,klan or Aryan nation are hiring. There is supposedly a labor shortage afoot.

Non-colored neighborhood; dog walker for $10.00 an hour

I wonder if dogs would find this man agreeable?

Why would the guy rehire him when he was not a good employee?

Why would Josh want to go back there if he was not happy there?

There are many jobs he can try to get. I don’t think this job was a good fit for him.

Josh has to wake up and face his bigotry and then look for another job somewhere else. He burned his bridges at that place.

Josh sounds like a real peach…

They won’t rehire him. He torched that bridge, and I can assure you that your manager felt a big sigh of relief when he had enough cause to do so. People like him are toxic to the culture in a workplace, sew discontent and lower the bar for what’s acceptable. Maybe the best thing to do is to find new friends? Or try to help Josh realize he’s a racist piece of shit and get some help with that?

Don’t give him any money.

Uh…why would you want to…

…never mind.

If you can’t already see why helping this person get his job back is probably not a good idea, nothing I say will make a bit of difference.

Meh. To hell with Josh. He got what was coming. Racist or not, he is clearly fine using people, lying, cheating and stealing. No honor, no character. This is affecting you negatively because he has decided to make it your problem too. Why are you friends again?

Don’t ruin your reputation by taking up for your friend.
And stop giving him money.

Re:“Josh was an efficient worker and he was cool with the manager.

I think from what you told us that perhaps Josh was hoping to become a
manager as he got along well with the last one.

As you stated he told you that he WAS NOT racist….then this is a clue to
his behaviour.

He clearly is disappointed in not being picked as manager or assistant
manager, therefore he literally gave up trying..hense his haphazard
attempts of doing a good job.

@Inspired_2write Read it a again. The OP clearly says that they are not racist but that they suspect Josh is. You are misinterpreting what went on.

It is neither your job nor your business.

@janbb
Yes you are right, sorry I missed that fact.

@JohnCooper321 With all the details you provided the word “freind” doesn’t seem to apply.
Did he say to you something like referring to/seeing me as a freind, giving me money, etc., makes a real difference in creating a non-hostile and welcoming atmosphere,it doesn’t cost anything, ....it’s easy,...? Maybe he tries to get people to address him as “massa” too. (Added)
