Has anybody here seen Shen Yun?

Asked by Acrylic (3358points) April 18th, 2023

Kid wanted to go, we got a couple tickets for an upcoming show for a daddy/dayughter date. Did you see it before? Was it good? We’re going regardless, just curious on impressions of the show.

Yes. We were given tickets as a gift. I thought the music and performances were lovely. Then, toward the end, it abruptly shifted to political propaganda with banners bearing messages unfurling and cast members chanting on stage. It was very odd.

Isn’t that ^^^ the purpose of the show?

@Jeruba I’ve read that they are members of a religious group, the Falun Gong, with strong anti-Communist China, homophobic and anti- evolution beliefs. Here’s a quote from Wikipedia:

“Shen Yun performances have received criticism for promoting sectarian doctrines and negative views of evolution, atheism, and homosexuality. The group is promoted by The Epoch Times, a far-right media outlet affiliated with Falun Gong.”

However, @Acrylic, you have the tickets and may even agree with some of the philosophy so enjoy the show.

I’ve only seen commercials for the Chiang Kai-shek Dancing Propaganda Review. ;)

@Jeruba: Apparently. I didn’t know that at the time.

I refuse to watch anything by that anti evolution pro Trump right wing antivax organization

Wow! Didn’t expect this question to take some weird political turn. Antivax? Couldn’t care less, unvaxed myself.

@Acrylic Then you you are ignorant. Shen Yun is part of Falun Gong, which is a fringe right wing religious cult that was founded by a millionaire living in the United States who makes money by grifting off his cult followers. They formed the Epoch Times which is a far right world-wide political newspaper who support far-right fascist leading candidates throughout the world. Shen Yun was formed as a money-making scheme for Falun Gong and yes, they might have pretty dancers and acrobats but what they are funding is reprehensible. If that suits you, then go right ahead and purchase a ticket.

@Caravanfan We did already, just wanted to see a dancing show. Looking forward to it!

They used to advertise small scale at our kids’ Chinese school in the Bay Area. Heard they were political propaganda of some sort so avoided them all these years. Seems their advertising budget is a lot bigger these days. Targeting beyond the Chinese-American community now.

We just got back from the show and it was absolutely delightful. Beautiful dances, beautiful costumes, beautiful music. There were a couple songs that was of their religion, and a bit in a routine or two and they sold some religious items, but they weren’t in your face about it. Was a totally acceptable if not underwhelming amount. There was a bit of anti-communism in their final bit, but nothing extremely political like the The Dixie Chick’s concert from some years ago. We bought acfew souvenirs, what they do with their money is their business. If you like dancing shows I highly recommend. We’ll probably see another show some day.
