Good question. I toodled off to Wikipedia and found a list of horror fiction writers. Other than Stephen King, the current (read: living) writers I am familiar with and enjoy are:

- Clive Barker
– Poppy Z. Brite
– Neil Gaiman
– Richard Matheson
– Richard Christian Matheson
– Chuck Palahniuk

I prefer King to Barker and the younger Matheson (R.C.). I prefer King’s horror to PZB’s horror, but would take her later works over anything of King’s. And I’d read Gaiman, Palahniuk or the elder Matheson before King any day.

This is saying a lot. I really like Stephen King. As a writer and as a person.

Stephen King pays attention to the little details when he tells a story. he really helps bring the story to life.
