Have you tried washing it?

The smell happened right after the last load of dishes. We pre-wash everything before it goes in the dishwasher, so I doubt its remnant food.

I would try running it once with soap but no dishes.

I would pour some beach into the bottom area around the drain.

I would investigate the water source. If you have "well" water sometimes the source can become contaminated (water runoff from rain and such) but it usually goes away.

Put some Tang powdered orange drink in detergent section and run dishwasher through a full cycle using hot water. Make sure the dishwasher is empty of dishes. The Tang will deodorize your dishwasher and also remove stains on interior of washer and make it brighter. It also helps toreduce build up on your motor. Hope this helps.

the drain is connected to the sink drain usually. If you have old food in the disposal that will do it to. If you run the dishwasher empty and also run your disposal (if you have one) with a cut up lemon and water running until gone it should clear out the smell

My well (300' deep) water sometimes smells like sulphur...also the rubber flange and stopper in my sink (for my disposal) get covered w. yucky gunk. I am horrified when I remember to remove the parts, soak in bleach and water and then scrub w.a toothbrush.

I am afraid to ask what "smells like hiney" means so I won't. Unpleasant odor, I gather.

If you can't find TANG, drink of the geri-nauts, get a product call GLISSEN. You can find it on the web. Its powdered fruit acid to the umteenth power. Gets stains off bathtubs etc. Don't use it on natural stone.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. The disposal was due to have a lemon run through it and that helped. I also ran strawberry-orange Tang (regular orange wasn't available) through a cycle in the dishwasher and it worked like a charm - no more hiney smell.

There’s a product called Glissen, made of fruit acids. You can order it on the net.

You can also use a microbial product called Bio-Clean. A couple of tablespoons in the bottom with a cup of warm water and the stank will be gone in the morning. Some plumbers sell something similar but the prices is much higher.http://www.fluther.com/join/
