Does fluther lean to the left? If so, why?

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12574points) October 10th, 2008

I’ve heard it said that the U.S. is somewhat evenly split between liberals and convservatives, but it seems that fluther may not be. What do you think and why?

According to some bipartisan polls, the country identifies itself as 60% conservative and only 36% liberal.

Why Fluther? On the internet, most groups skew younger and more liberal.

squirbel's avatar

Also, I will also make the generalization that liberal-types tend to be the majority among thoughtful and web-involved individuals.

Emilyy's avatar

Yeah, my completely non-scientific assessment would be that there are probably a lot of conservative folks out there in the bible belt/Middle America that are either not using computers at all, or are using them primarily for email and basic web searches, rather than Fluther.

cheebdragon's avatar

Im a republican, not a damn Mormon.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Because fluther is a group of intelligent people. ^_^

Sueanne_Tremendous's avatar

As a moderate Republican, all I can say is Fluther allows me to play nicely with Liberals. Repubs are a boring lot at times.

Sueanne_Tremendous's avatar

@Uber: Don’t mistake intelligence for youthful exuberance. : )~

(or the converse either…youthful exuberance for intelligence)

Most of the rednecks are away from there computers catching bass, shooting deer or working on there 350 stepside Chevy 4×4. So thats why there not here. They are too busy.

Magnus's avatar

The Internet is a liberal place.

Sloane2024's avatar

I’m from the south, and a Republican Conservative; I don’t appreciate the generalization, Buster. I can use the correct forms of “there”, “their”, and “they’re” as well. You might want to check your grammar before accusing others of doing seemingly “ignorant” activities. as you so implied. (although I’ve never ridden in a Chevy 4×4, been fishing, or shot a deer)

BCarlyle's avatar

I think part of the explanation might have to do with the preponderance of users in the Bay Area, Austin and New York. All three of these areas are generally more liberal than many other parts of the country…

augustlan's avatar

Well I’m living in West Virginia, and am 41 years old. I’m also a democrat.

Emilyy's avatar

Touche Sloane, regarding the grammar.

cheebdragon's avatar

I think you mean touché...

buster's avatar

@ Sloane im from Tennessee and I have done all three things in the last three weeks. Maybe thats why my lurve ain’t so high. Anyways I didnt graduate from high school and get a fancy edgiemucation like all you city slickers and maybe calling me out on my grammar makes you feel better about yourself. Lick my grits.

Snoopy's avatar

Yawn. Some of the liberals on fluther see themselves as soooo progressive and open minded. When you read some of the posts on this thread it is laughable. Defining yourself as a liberal doesn’t equate to automatically being intelligent or, clearly, thoughtful.

I think the first answer (rob’s) said it the best and most accurately.

Cardinal's avatar

Very left leaning, but none offer up stupid answers (or questions).

Snoopy's avatar

@cardinal Wow. None? Ever? Never-ever?

Nimis's avatar

It’s got a George Costanza wallet in its left pocket?

La_chica_gomela's avatar

Nimis, wouldn’t it be the right pocket?

Snoopy's avatar

LaChica: left pocket weight=left leaning, no?

La_chica_gomela's avatar

Ok. I was thinking of how George sits all sideways in that episode because he’s sitting on his huge wallet with one butt cheek. I gotcha now.

Snoopy's avatar

La Chica Oh. I see…in that case you would be correct. And that would make sense….as most guys put the wallet in the back pocket.

Over thinking, though, I believe :)

albeit, more accurate :)

Genesis began at a progressive NE university, if that means anything. All friends and family were then also leaning this way \. The demographics have changed since then. I still lean \ even though I skew the age curve /. Most of MY friends (my age) are progressive thinkers and well-educated.

Grammer Nazi’s!? How very left and right wing of you all. I think that the majority of folks playing on the Internet in social forums like this generally are a little less “old school” and are open to things like, debate and argument this creating a more leftist feel. Let’s also not forget how many times you can read an answer and you can almost hear someones snide snicker or sigh of disgust thus giving it a very right side of the line feel. If you ask me it all went downhill the moment the two party system went in to effect.

Knotmyday's avatar

“Grammar” Nazi’s, my dear judochop.

As someone once lamented, naught is sacred here.

I agree that bipatisan bullying is starting to get old, but sheep aren’t intimidated by the prospect of counting to two.

squirbel's avatar

But sheep can’t count.

[hi, i’m squirbel, of the logic-nazis]

judochop's avatar

forgive me. I type on an iPhone.

gailcalled's avatar

@knot. Grammar Nazis, and a bi-pat to you also.:-)

Sloane2024's avatar

@Buster: I’m not a city slicker. I’m originally from a tiny town in northern MS where majority of those who live there participate in your mentioned activities on a daily basis, but I am not one of them. Maybe you enjoy being stereotyped, but I certainly don’t appreciate it.

“Does fluther lean to the left?”

Seriously—you have to ask?

La_chica_gomela's avatar

I really want to know what people’s opinions are on why, but I didn’t want to ask the question in a biased way. I try not to assume that everyone else sees the world the same way I do. It sounds like that’s something you need to work on, aidje.

aidje's avatar

@La_chica
Okay. That makes sense. But about that last part… are you saying that just because I think that Fluther leans to the left, that means that I think everyone sees the world the same way I do? I don’t think that at all. That would be incredibly ignorant and arrogant. I simply think most people on Fluther will agree that the collective tends to lean pretty left, just like most people will agree that the Huffington Post leans left and that the sky is usually blue.

Just look at this thread. Quite a bit of Obama love, no McCain love, and then one random comment from me about anarchist philosophy (because I wanted to point out how someone else saw something).

Knotmyday's avatar

Hee hee. Bi-pats all around. If it were “Talk Like a Pirate Day” I might have remembered the Arrrrrrr.

@squirb- sheep may not count, but their votes do (unfortunately).

gailcalled's avatar

Speaking of sheep; here’s what Bach thought. Forget the political arena for 5 minutes.

squirbel counts sheep, till she falls asleep.
the sheep will leap
and follow the silly veep [palin]
and the left-leaning sheep
will weep, weep, weep.
