If a friend of yours needed a kidney to save his/her life, would you be willing to donate one of yours?

Asked by JackAdams (6574points) October 11th, 2008

A hypothetical situation, of course.

If your answer is “No,” please be kind enough to share your reason(s) with The Collective.

My answer is “Yes,” and with zero hesitation, as long as the person was genuinely a FRIEND, by my definition of the word:

“A ‘friend’ is a person who knows ALL ABOUT YOU, but loves you, anyway.”

God, I guess this must be the most shallow and disgusting though process ever, but my only hesitation would be because of the scar it would leave.

As long as the person was a true friend, I wouldn’t mind giving up a kidney for him/her, and I probably eventually would decide to do it. My only hesitation would be related to something quite shallow.

Remember this ordeal with Richard Lewis?

Yep, I would, for a friend by the same definition as yours Jack. That would be a big deposit in your karmic bank account, wouldn’t it?

JackAdams's avatar

Yes, but I wouldn’t do it for “karma.”

I’d be motivated only by my LOVE for my friend.

I love ALL of my really true friends.

BOTH of them…

SoapChef's avatar

That wouldn’t be my motivation either, but a nice by product of such a selfless act.

I would, except I have kidney disease! Chances are, I’d be the one in need of a donation.

JackAdams's avatar

Call me, if that happens, Gawd forbid.

I have an extra one…

richardhenry's avatar

Absolutely, yeah.

For friends or family yes….friends of friends I would say more than likely

Not for a friend, but I would do for my own child. Mainly because you never know when you’re going to need the spare one. I might donate a lobe of liver depending on how close a friend they were.

Magnus's avatar

Yes, w/o hessitation. Though I’d probably die from it if I give away my healthy one.

Mitsu_Neko's avatar

I would be willing. I was going to donate a kidney to a local manI never met and went through everything to learn my kidneys were not a match.

If it was family or someone I loved deeply; I would be willing to donate my heart

Honestly, this question leaves me torn. I have three sons of my own, five brothers and sisters and 11 nieces and nephews. I have always kind of figured I would hang on to my kidneys in case any of these folks might need one. Blood, bone marrow, part of the liver, yes – but kidneys are in limited supply so I really think I would hold on to both of them just in case.

MissAnthrope's avatar

Yes, I would.. no hesitation. I don’t have a big family, so my close friends are as dear to me as blood kin. If one of them needed a kidney to live, I would be the first person to volunteer.

JackAdams's avatar

SM, what if it was your BFF?

AstroChuck's avatar

Absolutely not. The reason? I had hepatitis back in 1980. Any recipient of any off my organs would DIE!

scamp's avatar

I would do it for a family member, but I don’t think I would do it for a friend. I doubt we would match anyway. Don’t you have to be very closely related for kidneys to match?

Nimis's avatar

If I considered that friend as family, yes.
Otherwise, no.

SuperMouse's avatar

For you Jack, anything…

JackAdams's avatar

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

I’m touched!

(That’s what my analyst says…)

shadling21's avatar

Absolutely, without question. I love my friends and would do anything to keep them around.

I love what Nimis said about friends being part of the family. Maybe once (if?) I have children, I’ll feel differently. But once the occasion arises, I don’t think I could live with myself if I didn’t help my friend…

MacBean's avatar

I would, without hesitation, if my health allowed it.

Girlofscience:::::new donor proceedures leave almost no scar. in fact some are now being taken through the navel with NO scar to donor. there have been some recent stories of “domino” donations where you want to donate but you don’t match the needs of your friend, but you donate to another and someone else donates to your friend and so on and so on. this is somewhat controversial but may be a breakthrough with the critical shortage of kidney donations. Live donations are the best because you can have time to throughly investigate the biology match for the most successful transplant. I challenge all you flutherites to sign your drivers license to be a donor if, god forbid, you die. Live Well This Life

Definitely. With no hesitation.

Yes, no questions asked.
