What is the best teeth whitener?

Asked by lynzeut (881points) November 12th, 2008

Has anyone tested out multiple over the counter teeth whitening strips? If so what brand was the best as far as results?

I have teeth whitening trays and goo from the dentist.

One thing I can tell you about the OTC stuff….it isn’t as strong as the stuff you can get from the dentist. That isn’t to say it doesn’t work, it just takes longer. Might be as or more cost effective to get it from the dentist.

Also, the strips are only so long. In other words, the trays cover all of your teeth, but the strips just get the teeth in the front. Probably not a big deal unless you open your mouth widely…?

I would also think that the strips would work better than the paint on stuff. Logic would tell you that the paint on stuff would wash away pretty quickly from your saliva.

One final thing….how effective any whitening product depends on your current tooth color. If your current color is yellowish then the whitening products should work. If you color is actually a little grayish then the whitening stuff (even the stuff from the dentist) won’t work as well.

I can’t imagine there being too much of a difference between brands since they use the same chemical to bleach your teeth. The only difference might be concentration (7 day strips, 24 day strips, etc).

But some people’s teeth become far too sensitive after using the higher concentration. Something to think about.

@spargett The sensitivity, if it occurs, is not permanent. i.e stop using the product or increase time periods between usage and it goes away…

Using Crest ones for a week, I could notice a big difference. And only like $25. It’s been over a year and they’re still white, and that’s good enough for me.

A primer coat of “Kills” might be in order….
