Christmas Shopping help for my guy friend?

Asked by science_girl89 (236points) December 9th, 2008

Okay, so I just moved to California a few months ago, and in that time I’ve only made a few friends. My best friend is a guy, we hang out all the time. There isn’t a heck of a lot I’m thinking about giving him for christmas. Food is a major possibility, but it is so fleeting (he really likes food).

I’m trying to find something a little more long-term. I was thinking that maybe a key fob or key chain that is somewhat masculine but not cheesy or childish. I want to give him something he’d appreciate. Any Suggestions? I really need a website or suggestion for one.

Note: The thought process behind the keychain is that he doesn’t have a lot of stuff that he considers adult purchases. So, he takes immense pride in his vehicle. Hence, I really don’t want to get him a pc or xbox 360 game, he might consider them fun but it wouldn’t be in the same magnitude range.

If he likes food, how about a cooking class at Sur la Table?

Get him food but in a container that he could put in his cupholder. Kinda like those gum containers, but with food in it. There, you just killed two birds with one stone.

Does he have a nice wallet?

Try a gift card to his favorite coffee shop. It’s appropriate for someone you’ve known for a short time but you can tailor it to the degree of your friendship. If the two of you are such good friends, $25 or $30 would be nice. In this economy, everyone’s had to give up little things. he’d probably love it if he could get his morning coffee again. Good luck!

Get him a model of the same kind of vehicle he owns.

check out uncrate.com. Or buy him a Holga and some film, www.lomography.com. A cool plant or kitchen herb garden can be cool. How much are you prepared to spend on this friend?

Is there some kind of food like bacon or cheese or pie he loves that you could give him a monthly subscription thing for? Like a Cheese of the Month Club membership.

I’m a big fan of food and I’d love something like that from a friend.

(this was awkwardly worded on my part).

Maybe he might appreciate a pointsettia? Orchid? Of course you could bake him some cookies or brownies.

@Judo- kudos on the Holga. I have a lot of fun playing with mine.

In the way of key chains – a few friends of mine swear by their Swiss Army Knife-combo key chains. They always come in handy when you’d least expect it!

@jsc3791: My best friend is a guy and he adores his Swiss Army Knife-combo key chain. That’s a really good idea!!

If you’ve got a little extra money to spend on him, try going to Williams-Sonoma and creating a really unique gift of interesting spices and useful, but unusual, cooking utensils. You could even throw in a best-selling cookbook you think he might like. This would allow you to personalize it a little bit by tailoring to his individual tastes.
