Another knitting question - please help!

Asked by La_chica_gomela (12574points) December 18th, 2008

Would it still look like a basketweave if I just did knit two, purl two, and did two rows the same, and then the next two rows different? Or what that be something else?

Thanks!

Disclaimer: I’ve never done basketweave before. But…I would imagine that you would want to do more than a two-by-two square. I would maybe try a 4-by-4, so knit 4, purl 4, for a row. Remember that for the next row, when you’re working back in the other direction, you want to switch the order and start with purl 4, then knit 4. Repeat for 4 rows then switch the pattern, reversing when you purl and when you knit. Make sure that if you purled going one direction, then you should knit those same stitches when you’re heading back in the other direction, and vice versa.

In sum: I think 2×2 would be a little too small, and would end up looking like a weird ribbed pattern instead of basket weave. Something bigger will end up looking more like a standard basket weave pattern. But there’s only one way to know for sure! Try and see!

Feel free to respond if this doesnt make sense to you, i’m writing in a hurry and I may not have made myself clear.

Hanna, you’ve sort of got the idea. I was just mulling it over, and when I read your answer I was about to get back on to say that I realized 4 or 5 would be better.

2×2 wouldn’t be ribbing though, it would be a seed stitch, I believe.

You said, “Remember that for the next row, when you’re working back in the other direction, you want to switch the order and start with purl 4, then knit 4.” but I don’t think that that’s right, because I’ve been working on ribbing just now, and that’s what you do for ribbing.

For basket weave, switching would be necessary while you’re still working on the same “box” as the row before. When you think about it, one “section” of basketweave is exactly like a ribbed pattern. It’s only the fact that it switches after a few rows that make it basketweave, not ribbed. Let me know if that makes sense.

@hannahsugs: Yes, yes! That’s exactly the way I was trying to describe it in the other knitting question, but you said it much better!
