Help with Windows XP and Blue Screen Nightmare, please?

Asked by Evan (810points) December 19th, 2008

So my laptop began blue screening, and each time would load up saying that there was a problem with “software” in the system32 config folder, in windows. nothing would work to boot the computer, so i installed a second version of windows into a folder called “windows2”. unfortunately, despite being an admin, i could not access my user folder that was set up with the original version of windows. it said “access denied”. and the original version of windows still just blue screened.

so i installed a third version of windows, so that I could copy the config files from the working version of windows, to the non-working original windows. This worked, and the original version of windows would now load up. but it was (not surprisingly) an exact copy of the new version of windows.. and i could still not access the user folder.

is there any genius out there who might have some insight as to how to go about getting access to those files..?

You probably had a password… If so your files are encrypted :(
You did mistake installing 2nd and 3rd copy of windows, all you had to do is to take hard drive out and attach it to another PC and do check disk, it would fix your problem or just do repair install. If you can do it, try this:
insert XP cd, on start up it will ask what you wanna do, press enter -> F8 -> then choose your first XP -> then choose repair. otherwise you will have to use password crackers to clear you password

Ok, first question do you have an external HD case and the knowledge to take the HD out of the laptop and put it in the external case. Second question, and its not a fanboyish silly one. Do you have a mac? Simply because its easier to copy off all your important files as a mac will bypass the windows encryption. If not try using windows to copy off the files.

After you’ve done this, Format the HD (Just write back if you’re having any trouble), put it back in your Laptop and insert the windows disc doing a clean install of windows onto the machine. then just put all the files you stored on the spare computer back into there respective locations, just the My Documents etc. Don’t Replace The System Files With The Old Ones. It might pay to run a virus scan on them before opening them just so you know that they’re all clean and not the cause of your BSOD troubles.

Have you tried “taking ownership” of the user folder with the important data in it? Read how to do that here .
