Magic the Gathering?

Asked by Foolaholic (5804points) December 24th, 2008

I was wondering if there are any other flutheree’s out there who play magic, and how they prefer to play. I’m not saying anyone should reveal any secrets, but say, what color you prefer, or if you like type 1 or 2 better. Or do you just collect?
Personally, I’m a fan of green. I use a treefolk deck that’s all about using tribal advantages to boost my defenses.

My brother was an avid Magic player, but I never could understand the rules. I used to go to the card shop with him, and I would pick out a few 10c cards that had cool art. The white cards were usually my favorite, and the black ones were my least favorite. But tapping swamps and stuff… I just couldn’t “get it.”

Yes!!!! You are not alone!!!!

Currently, my favorite deck is a type 1 red/black re-animator deck. I’m trying to make it a multi-player deck but it mostly works in single player. I also have a type 2 deck I use for when I play FNM. That on’es black and white wither with a sick nip/edge combo.

I only just got into magic this past year, so sadly I don’t have all the experience of type 1 that my friends do. The more older cards that I find, the more I think that strategies work best when I mix type 1 and 2. at this point, the only thing that keeps me afloat amongst friends who have been playing for 7 odd years is my knowledge of new expansions.

Also; Planeswalkers, yes or no?

I like Planeswalkers. I’ve been beat pretty hard by a Planeswalker or two. I have one in my mill deck but I haven’t gotten to use him yet. I think the rules around them are somewhat complex and with magic rules changing all the time, this can get very confusing. I guess I like them, but you need to build the deck around them or find one that fits perfectly in a deck you already have.

Mill deck? Let me guess, Jace?

I played MTG from 94 – 99. Many tardies to college classes during those years. My favorite decks were Blue because you got to be trixy. :) I don’t play anymore because it got too hard to keep up not to mention expensive. I still have all my cards in boxes for when my kids are old enough to play.

I used to play, but the rules got far too complex, and it seemed that the only way to reliably win was to spend ridiculous amounts of money on equally ridiculous combo decks. I still love the card art though – some really incredible stuff.

@foolaholic: Oh yeah. Jace is my man. :)

ahhhh Magic, I’ve went back to playing so many times..

My awesome deck was a Green Blue deck. I had a lot of flashback, counters, and madness. A lot of good combos. Didn’t lose much with it.

when I did play I was with you and my favorite/best deck was an all green elf deck.
It moved fast and I could easily have 100 life and 30/30 creatures really fast.
I also had a pretty badass red/white deck

I loved playing in high school and I would use blue and black and just burn my opponents mans pool.

My friend has found the perfect combination of goblins, to the point that he can draw enough cards and produce enough mana to play just about his entire deck by about turn 6. You have to see it to believe it.

my elf deck worked that way also but not always… I never got the perfect combo down

Squirrels!!!

Never played much, but I love green decks.

I dig the Merfolk.

I agree. I find the new merfolk make very efficient millstone decks.

I prefer Blue/Black Library eaters, and my personal favorite of mine which is a dominator is my Mono-Black Vamp deck loaded with Nocturnus, Kalitas, Sorin, and of course Blade of the Blood Chief with the combo of bloodchief ascension and sanguine bond. Also Painful Quandry is a big hitter in my vamp deck

I currently have two decks, a white/blue and a white/red. I used to play Yu-gi-oh, so when I first started with magic, one of the things that bothered me was the lack of counters in all the colors. I tend to stick with white because I’m a pretty defensive player (the white/red was my attempt to fix that, and it’s actually pretty decent). I played Yu-gi-oh with a deck that gave me a lot of life, and that translated into magic. Hence, my white/blue was my first deck.

I’m thinking of making a white/black with the idea of having it revolve around Sanguine’s Bond, white life giving cards, and Ajani’s Pridemates.

@Raevarin kicks my butt all the time though, but two headed giants where we’re teamed up together? Pwnage. He’s super offensive, and my white/blue is great with him.

I have plainswalkers in my decks, and I’ve used them, but I haven’t used their super abilities. I play for fun, and so I’ve always figured the super ability is for OMG I’M GOING TO DIE NEXT TURN or something. Both @Raevarin and I like to toy with each other if it is clear one of us has already won.
