I didn’t believe you so I had to google it. They do have red butts! Sorry, I can’t help you with why they do.

Because other baboons get turned on by it.

It’s a secondary sexual trait and is used in selecting a mate. Swelling and an increase in color can also be an indicator of hormonal stages and reproductive readiness.

Anything that makes more little baboons is going to have more representation in the next generation.

Why do peacocks have big ostentatious tails? Because at some point, peahens decided that if a peacock could manange to grow an impressive tail, he must be pretty well-fed, able to escape enemies (even with that handicap of a tail), and by gosh, it was sexy. So they flocked to the dude with the biggest tail, the Donald Trump of peacocks. And each generation, doing the same, has increased the selection pressure for bigger, brighter tails.

So, probably something like that. Bright red baboon butts are sex-ay!

Both male and female baboons have big red butts, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViHETy0Y6OI&feature=related so it’s not the same when other types of
female monkeys and chimps butts swell up to mate. The females butts still swell up though during heat. They have different purposes for their big red asses than that, like showing submission to other bamboons and cushioning.
