Why is it safer to sleep on your left side when pregnant and not on your right?

Asked by 2late2be (2292points) January 1st, 2009 from iPhone

I know that sleep on my back is bad to get enough oxigen for the baby and I, but left-right side?

Lying on your side with your knees bent is probably the most comfortable position to sleep in. Many doctors specifically recommend lying on your left side for improved circulation. Lying on your left will keep the weight of the uterus off your liver and the large vein that carries blood back to the heart from your feet and legs.

Thanks aanuszek! Right now I can’t sleep comfortable in any side or position though… 29 weeks pregnant and counting…

For comfortable side sleeping while pregnant, try this: One pillow under your head, another under/beside your belly and another between your knees. I found that helped support all of the achy areas, and still sleep that way to this day (long after my last pregnancy).

Well, I actually sleep with like 3 pillows all around me, it’s just too uncomfortable to move from one side to another, I used to sleep…. I don’t know the correct word cause I’m still learning, but I used to sleep on my tummy! That’s my favorite position and now I can’t, so I just have to wait and be patient LOL.. Thanks anyways.

I use to have one of those bean bag kind of pillows and I’d put it under my belly and hug it. Tummy is my favorite position too I hated sleeping on my side but that pillow helped a great deal.

29 weeks seems to really be the fun time to figure out how to sleep. I had pregnancy induced high blood pressure in both of my live births, I spent the entire time on my left side. Blah!

I did a cross between augustlan’s and adri027’s pillow arrangement. I used the bean bag pillows under my belly and just hoped that the other pillows would work! Towards the end, before they put me in to be monitored, I had to try to elevate my feet too. I swear, I thought I was going to roll off the bed, I feel certain my husband would have left me there. I already had him sleeping with a window open, in winter.

I also tried to keep one under my shoulder, it seemed to help that unsteady feeling. (until my tummy finally popped out…I swear, no tummy one day, the next, i couldn’t see my feet. I’m sure it wasn’t exactly that way…but it was strange!)

Good luck!
