Has there ever been a movie that seemed to depress you for days?

Asked by sjmc1989 (5499points) March 8th, 2009

I just want to know if Im just overly sensitive person or if other people have had a problem with shaking off depressing movies and if so what were they?

When I saw Life is Beautiful I felt depressed for days(Concentration camp movies really get to me) and Requiem For a Dream was another that seemed to stay with me.

I would love to hear if anyone has any.

Requiem For a Dream made me want to kill myself. That movie was terrible.

Usually the longer a movie sticks with me the better it is. I’m not usually depressed for any longer than it takes to fall asleep, but a movie can weigh me down, sure.

Schindler’s List is a fine example.

I’d agree with you on Life is Beautiful and Requiem For a Dream!

Star Wars Episode 1.

Thought of another one Into the Wild but you have to read the book to get the full effect of just how depressing the situation was but that one stayed with me awhile

Jeruba's avatar

The first one that had that effect on me was the landmark The Pawnbroker (1964). There have been many since.

AlfredaPrufrock's avatar

Revolutionary Road had me out of sorts for days.

The usual movies you would expect normally just make me think for days as I am a really upbeat person. But dog scene (if you saw the movie, you will know the one) “I am Legend” made me cry for days.

On the same note, I will not be seeing Marley and Me at the theater, because I am sure it will do the same thing.

Open Water. Not because it was sad, but because it was unfortunate that that actually got made into a movie.

sjmc1989's avatar

@KimJSCP I totally forgot about I am Legend I cried like a baby even though a friend had told me what happens to prepare me for it. Pretty much any sad parts that involves animals Im bawling like a 3 year old.

And yet another one that I can believe I forgot is Doctor Zhivago I watched that when I was like 11 and I was tramatized for a long time I just now can watch it again

kevbo's avatar

What people call depressing, I usually call beautiful and/or poignant.

whackyrusty's avatar

Come and See. A harrowing and depressing experience, and more recently, Hunger.

emt333's avatar

i’m going through it right now with Two Lovers

aprilsimnel's avatar

It was a made-for-TV movie, but I wanted to hide for days when i saw it: The Day After

Jeruba's avatar

Two Lovers depressed you, @emt333?

@aprilsimnel, that was 1983, and I still remember it too. Very powerful.

figbash's avatar

My parent’s wedding movies.

Mr_M's avatar

I forget the name. The one where the young guy becomes a porn actor. In the last scene he pulls something out of his pants. Depressed me for years.

kevbo's avatar

Actually, “Dumb and Dumber” and “There’s Something About Mary”. It depressed me that millions were spent so we could watch a guy take a dump and grotesque humor is depressing in general.

peyton_farquhar's avatar

I don’t know why, but I always cry really hard at the end of The Sixth Sense when Bruce Willis finds out he’s dead.

marinelife's avatar

Too many. I have too much empathy. I usually avoid movies like that. The first one for me was Old Yeller, which I could not even get through. The last one that really got to me was “Glory.”

It causes a bit of a problem, because my husband likes to use movies for catharsis, and I am the opposite. So, we do a lot of do si do’ing to pick a film we will both enjoy.

StephK's avatar

The Dutchess. Seriously. I couldn’t decide if I liked it or hated it but either way it had me off-kilter for a good while.

jbfletcherfan's avatar

The saddest one I’ve ever seen is Titanic. I just sobbed at the end. I didn’t think they’d have Jack die in the end. I have that movie here at home & I know I’ll never watch it again.

casheroo's avatar

The Mist really messed with me. (yes, i know it was a novel..i never read it) I could not imagine that final situation. Really tore me apart.
Saving Private Ryan. Forest Gump. Steel Magnolia’s.
I tend to cry a lot during movies, I hate seeing sad ones at the theater. I cried during Click!

Jeruba's avatar

I remember that one, too, @Mr_M. It was pretty grim. I know it wasn’t one of my rental picks.

tiffyandthewall's avatar

oh my god, yes. i watched brokeback mountain and i seriously, i just could not stop crying. i don’t know why it affected me so much, but i just sat down when it was over and cried and cried, and then i went inside and started crocheting and i still couldn’t stop crying. it was so pathetic. and for like a week, any time someone would mention it, or i’d mention that i saw it, i’d get really teary. i still get really really sad whenever i think about it. i thought it was a great movie, but i never want to see it again. i don’t think i could.

kevbo's avatar

I cried at the end of Brokeback, too, but mainly because of the distance between the father & daughter.

emt333's avatar

@Jeruba yup, i can’t seem to shake it. but i really liked the movie and it gave me lots to think about. i thought there were some brutally honest portrayals of people and relationships. i liked how the ending was morally ambivalent, because that is true to life. perhaps too true to life… enough to put me in a funk.

madcapper's avatar

Ken Park got me in a funk…
Also American Beauty and Donnie Darko depress me and make me happy at the same time.

trumi's avatar

@madcapper I take it you live in the suburbs? Sorry man.

shrubbery's avatar

The Power of One stayed with me for a while and motivated me to read the book, which has stayed with me ever since.

madcapper's avatar

@trumi I grew up there but don’t anymore thank god haha

Bri_L's avatar

saving private ryan. The scene where the guy was pushing the knife into the other soldier and saying “shhshshhhhhh” like he was putting him to sleep. I couldn’t get that out of my head. and that reporter fucker just froze.

serenityNOW's avatar

I’d agree with Brokeback Mountain – I actually went to see it alone and started crying like a baby in the theater. I have it on DVD, but I couldn’t even watch the first 15 minutes again. But, when I first saw the question, I thought of “The Hours.” What a painful experience those characters endured.

May2689's avatar

I would say “The boy in the stripped pajama”. That movie left me numb.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

I’ve had movies that stay with me for days.. but not really depressing ones. Something about certain movies attaches to us dreamer types. =D

shrubbery's avatar

Also, Gone Baby Gone had me thinking about it for a while afterwards.

NaturalMineralWater's avatar

Green Street Hooligans had me wanting to be a british soccer hooligan for days… Fight club had me wanting to fight for days.. Castaway made me extremely appreciative of the little things in life for days…. 8 seconds had me wanting to be a cowboy for days…. Needless to say I have no problem immersing myself into a movie…

sjmc1989's avatar

@May2689 I was really wanting to see that movie and I was wondering if it was going to make me cry like a baby now I know the answer to that one. If you like movies like that try The Grey Zone if you haven’t seen it. It was another movie that depressed me for awhile. Good movie though.

whackyrusty's avatar

Solyaris is particularly haunting. Great film.

sjmc1989's avatar

Thought of another one.The Green Mile I started watching it again tonight and I just can’t stop crying. Beautiful movie though.

MacBean's avatar

@sjmc1989—There is Holocaust NONfiction that is less depressing than The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. It probably wouldn’t make you cry, though. Like @May2689 said, it gives more of a ‘dead inside’ feeling.

sjmc1989's avatar

@MacBean Could you give me some examples please? I would really appreciate it!

jerv's avatar

“Million Dollar Baby” was right up there, but I have to say that “Grave of the Fireflies” hit me a lot harder and for far longer.
