I think my fish is dying! Help?

Asked by tehsusenoh (6points) March 15th, 2009

My fish is laying at the bottom on his side, but randomly shoots up to the top of the tank, then drifts back down to the bottom! I just cleaned the tank! What do I do? I love my fish! :(

If he has any white spots on him he has fungus. That’s about the most you can do is get some kind of anti-fungus powder. Odds are though, the fish won’t make it…. sorry.

I’m not a vet, but I am a biologist who works with fish. We have a few hundred of them in our fish room and they do get infections from time to time, and there are meds that you can give them if they get things like gill rot. I’d call a vet if there’s one who does fish nearby, and if there isn’t you might be able to call or go to a local pet store that carries a lot of fish. They generally have someone there to take care of the more expensive ones there or will have the number of someone who they use when their fish get infections.

Was there something you did differently when you changed the tank?

Is the tank salt water? It may be the level of saline? Also perhaps there was some soap or product that was used? Water should also sit for 24 hours if it comes from the tap before putting in fish.

Poor fishy ): not much u can do but wait..

Don’t take this as fact, but every fish I have had acted like that just before it died. It was very depressing for me to see them struggle to the top, then run out of strength and sink back down.

I hope your fish is okay.

We once revived a Betta fish by putting it in a completely different container. We filtered the water through the Brita filter to remove the chlorine, and put in the water conditioning drops that we had in there. That fish lived for over a year after that.

It may just be a crazy fish I had a beta that lived almost 5 years… For like the last 2 years though he always floated up sidedown or would sink to the bottom… But when ever we put food in he swam up and ate it… Your fish may just be getting older

Id love to help ya out here, but your going to have to give a lot more info than that. What kind of fish is it? How long have you had it? Does it have any visible signs of illness? (ie fin rot, hole in the head, pop eye, cloudy eye, white blotches(ich)) How long has this behavior been going on?

Without knowing all that, there’s not much i could do to help ya out. But i hate to say it, it doesnt look good for mr fishy :(

Took you long enough.

I clearly don’t.

El_Cadejo's avatar

ok i confess me neither, i was just in the shower when this question was posted…....

That’s not much information to go on, but I have to wonder about a swim bladder problem.

tehsusenoh's avatar

@uberbatman It is a Powder Blue Male Dwarf Gourami. I’ve had it for almost a year and a half now. It had pop eye a couple months ago, but there are no visible symptoms other than the ones I listed. It has been going on since I changed it’s water about 8 hours ago. I suspect swim bladder disease based on the symptoms. My fish is supposed to live for 4 years…

El_Cadejo's avatar

@tehsusenoh wait so it was perfectly fine up until the water change?

tehsusenoh's avatar

Yeah, but it seems that the fish is okay now. He’s staying upright and swimming around.
Thanks.

eambos's avatar

Maybe it was shock?

El_Cadejo's avatar

@tehsusenoh did you do everything the same with this water change? Dechlorinate and heat to proper temp?

tehsusenoh's avatar

I did everything the same, and the fish requires 72F, which is the temp of my house. I have a dropper bottle that removes the chlorine and chloramine. Has big letters stating “MAKES WATER SAFE FOR FISH IMMEDIATELY,” so I don’t have to do much with cleaning.

El_Cadejo's avatar

@tehsusenoh hmmm thats odd, i really dont know what the problem with your fish was…. At least hes better now :). Keep an eye out for any weird behavior or markings on your fish. If you notice anything, post back in here.

asmonet's avatar

Maybe your fish is just a sillybutt.

El_Cadejo's avatar

Oh duh how stupid of me to not think of that. Yea asmonets got it your fish got that sillybutt syndrome

eambos's avatar

El_Cadejo's avatar
