Fancy ceramics with roses on them - how do i figure out the brand?

Asked by unacornea (314points) March 30th, 2009

i have these really pretty ceramics – it’s kind of a dish with two handles, and two pitchers, they have roses on the front and are a lovely pearly pink. the bottom of the dish has an imprint of an “M” with a circle around it. any idea how to find out who made them?

Noritake used an M in a circle. I’ll see if I can find a link. Here try this to start.

I used to own a consignment/antique store and did all sorts of research on marks. It can be quite difficult and time consuming but ton of fun. You can also go to the library and look at antique pottery books to look for marks. have fun!

There are websites that allow you to view various marks and learn which companies produced china or pottery with those marks. There are also websites that can give you an idea of the value of the piece.

To find the mark, try one of these:
http://www.mygrannysatticantiques.com/html/pottery__porcelain_and_china_m.htm
http://www.antique-china-porcelain-collectibles.com/porcelain_mark.htm
http://www.tsrestoration.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=page&id=2&chapter=8

Once you know more about that particular piece, you can search for it on eBay, google it, or check www.replacements.com to find out how much it is worth.
