Worked on a Kibbutz?

Asked by Zen (7748points) April 1st, 2009

I know this topic is new, as it didn’t finish the word in the “Topics” section. You can google it, if you are unfamiliar with the term for commune in Israel, or you can ask me about it. :-)

Not me though my stepdaughter had planned to go until she got caught up in an angry focus and obsession about the Palestinians in Gaza.

I stayed at Kibbutz S’nir (I think that’s right) for six weeks whilst part of an archaeological expedition. It’s a beautiful Kibbutz up in the mountains with the coldest Olympic sized swimming pool ever. Very nice cabins.

I have a brother-in-law who is trying to set up a disc golf course on a moshav south of Tel Aviv…loooooooong story.

Judi's avatar

I think this is where we stayed. It was in 2001, but this looks very familiar.

@crisw Disc golf course is…?

Zen's avatar

@crisw One of the loveliest of the kibbutzim on Lake Kineret.

@Zen

Frisbee golf- although you are not supposed to cal it that!

There are hoops on baskets, kind of like basketball hoops, set out on a course, kind of like a golf course. You see how many tries it takes to throw your Fris…er, disc- through each one.

Apparently, they don’t have this sport in Israel now, and he thinks it will take the country by storm.

I visited a kibbutz for a few days on an Israel trip in ‘96. Had a great time.

Here’s a Disc golf YouTube clip to give you a sense of how it looks.

@crisw I know that Ultimate is fairing well. Maybe this will too. I love playing frisbee. Since when is frisbee a bad word? It’s just like kleenex, right?

@Zen
I think, in this case, it’s because he’s trying to persuade some other manufacturer to sell him 10,000 of the things at a discount :>)

as an aside, do you know anything about Israeli land use laws?

Zen's avatar

@crisw 1. oic 2. No, sorry.

I know we’re off-topic on the original question, but it feels like the conversation has evolved. The word “Frisbee” isn’t used officially in disc golf or Ultimate because that word is trademarked by Wham-O, I believe.

@Zen, it’s funny you mention Ultimate is faring well in Israel. There’s an initiative happening right now there with the aim of building bridges of friendship and understanding between Israeli and Palestinian youth – through the sport of Ultimate. This is really inspiring to me, and I’ve given money for the cause. Here’s the link:

@Trustinglife

That is, in fact, one of the reasons my brother-in-law went to Israel, to attend that event. He called it a “plastic conference.” :>D
