What is the purpose of the power cable that comes with Targus 4-port USB 2.0 hub?

Asked by nina (895points) April 16th, 2009

I bought a USB 2.0 hub and it works fine without the power cable, but yet – it has one. What is its purpose.

Some devices are low power, and some are high power and will need the power provided by that AC cable. If everything works, it’s likely that all your devices are low power. If down the road you plug a device in and it doesn’t seem to work, try using that power cable.

I just recently bought a USB hub that sold the power cable separately. USB devices generally use 5 volts. Several USB devices can run off of the voltage but if too many devices are using up power, an external power source needs to be added.

If your not taking this Hub with you on a regular basis I recommend using the power cable. Its going to guarantee that no matter how much stuff you plug in, their will be power for it. It also helps to save battery life if your using a laptop. Things like iPods, small external HD’s, and any other electronic device that doesn’t have a dedicated power cable pulls power from a USB port. So your best to use that power cable if your plugging more then one thing into that USB hub.
