Is there a website that suggests meal pairings?

Asked by MrItty (17411points) June 16th, 2009

I’m so culinarily challenged, it’s almost frightening. For example, let’s say I want to make raviolis. What vegetable goes with them? I have no idea.

Is there any website you know of that I can plug in part of a complete meal, and have it spit back recommendations for accompanying side dishes?

There is a software program that dieticians use that will calculate the nutritional values for meals…. Probably not exactly what you are looking for.

All kinds of vegetables go with ravioli. What do you think would complement the flavor?

MrItty's avatar

@cwilbur if I knew that, I wouldn’t be looking for said website. :-P

MrItty: well, you’ve tasted ravioli and you’ve tasted different types of vegetables, right? What do you think would taste good together?

And if you think a certain pairing tastes good, why do you need a website to validate your choice? And if you don’t think that pairing tastes good, will you change your mind if you see on a website that someone else likes it?

@cwilbur you seem to not be either listening or hearing. Or perhaps just not understanding logic. The problem is that I DON’T know what tastes good together, despite the fact that yes I have tasted ravioli and tasted vegetables.

I am looking for SUGGESTIONS. Why is this a difficult concept for you to grasp? If you have no suggestion to offer, and do not know of a website like the one I describe, you can please feel free to keep your opinions of the validaty of my question to yourself, thanks.

I don’t grasp how you can have attained the age of over 10 years and not know what you like to taste.

My SUGGESTION is that you pay attention when you eat, and think about what would taste good with what.

I asked this question a while back. It’s not exactly the same, but I’m sure some of the suggested websites could help.

@MrItty I just did a quick google search for food pairings. I came across http://www.foodpairing.be. The website looks totally sweet, give it a try.
I love to cook, and think I will be using this website from now on.
Thanks for asking this question! I never would have thought to look that up.

Green salad and embellishments with everything except green salad.

This is a fantastic idea! Such a site would help people put more variety and balance into their meals and inspire them to cook more home made meals. For example, picking a non starch vegie to balance a dish with pasta, rice or bread.

With ravioli and most other pasta-and-tomato-sauce combinations, I think the best are
— green salad
— zucchini
— green beans (some people like Italian green beans, also known as fava beans)

There are some classic combinations such as macaroni & cheese, green beans, and hot dogs, for one, and fried or grilled chicken with corn on the cob, for another, and others that just come about as personal or family favorites. For example, I like baked potatoes and peas with a meat loaf, but others prefer a different combination.

Many recipes for a main dish offer suggestions for accompaniments that complement them nicely.
