I just joined up 10 minutes ago and I already have problems. Where can I get help or just bitch? For example; I can't post any answers and the "search" just popped up 10 different windows and advertisements?

Here, you should probably tell us what your problems are, instead of just bitching.

There are a ton of links on the bottom of pages with helpful info about the site.

What kind of problems?

marinelife's avatar

Welcome to the collective. Two minutes seems a little early to start bitching.

One thing that might help you is to add some context to your question in the Details section.

Also, please spend some time with the Fluther Gudielines.

Perhaps, you’re extended questions should be put in the details section.

I highly recommend reading for the first half hour or so, when you’re ready to post – make sure you’re logged in. Then jump in, don’t take what people say to you about the site’s etiquette personally. People will just be trying to help you fit in.

Okay, first, lurve for the name.
Are you running Internet Explorer 8? You will need to use the little blue “combatability View” button next to the web address at the top of the screen. Press it once, and that’s it.

@Marina Freudian slip?

Filfann. Thank you I love you.

I was about to go all hari kari on this place. Thanks.

The learning curve for fluther is a bit longer than ten minutes. Read the links everyone else has given and try a little patience. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll never go back to whatever you were doing before.

marinelife's avatar

@janbb Alas, no, my usual crappy typing, but I love the concept!

asmonet's avatar

You were going to kill yourself on Fluther?
That doesn’t even make sense.

marinelife's avatar

One more vote for Firefox from me.

@ asmonet, let’s look at that statement in a more poetic manner and decifer it to mean that I was going to excuse myself from fluther in a very violent manner. :P

marinelife's avatar

@Lovey_Howell I think you meant to address asmonet.

Lovey_Howell's avatar

I sit corrected.

I do not get the attitude after 10 minutes but welcome nonetheless.

This is an awesome place to learn and hang out. Get to know us. And holster the guns- you won’t need them.

Welcome! Let us know what we can do to help.

@filmfann Okay, I’ll bite. As someone who doesn’t use IE unless absolutely necessary, what is this “Compatibility View” button you’ve referred to? What does pushing it enable or disable?

filmfann's avatar

it is a feature on IE8, next to the address bar.
As I understand it, Webmasters have to create their sites so they can be seen by different browsers. Some sites aren’t correctly designed for IE8. Compatablity View kind of looks at sites in IE7 mode, the same way you can open different programs in Windows XP, in Windows 98 or 95 mode.

jrpowell's avatar

@filmfann :: You got that backwards. IE is a goddamn horrible program the doesn’t comply to the standards set forth by the W3C

Millions of hours have been wasted hacking sites to get them to work properly in IE.

filmfann's avatar

@johnpowell That is a ridiculously awful looking website. Are these guys are in charge, or think they are in charge?

jdogg's avatar

yes IE8 blows! If you are using it click the icon near the refresh button that is a ripped page and click it (activates compatibility mode) if not post message me and we can chat about your issues over that. Give fluther a little longer! I can’t tell you how many times I stayed up till 2AM just fooling around on fluther! Welcome to the fluther!

jdogg's avatar

ohh also safari for the win!

jrpowell's avatar

@filmfann :: The W3C is mainly in charge but they work with whatwg to define standards. They define the specs but they do not code the actual browsers.

IE is the problem here.

And the site isn’t pretty but it validates.

Welcome to Fluther! I promise, it’s not my fault!
