When is the best time to view a meteor shower?

Asked by cactuslover (1points) July 28th, 2009

There is a meteor shower happening, visible from the San Francisco Bay Area this week. A blog called “Meteorblog” says it lasts for about 2 weeks, but peaks tonight at 20 meteors/hour. Will I still see shooting stars if I go tomorrow night, one day after the peak date?

Since it’s lasting for about 2 weeks, that means there is a chance to see meteors every night in that time span (even if it’s just one every other hour).

The best time to view it, of course, is at the peak; barring that, viewing it as close to the peak as possible is just fine.

Be sure you get yourself very far away from sources of light pollution (e.g., cities) in order to get a good show!

Darn! I’m in New York City. We never see much here. Well, I did see a few rainbows by the Brooklyn Bridge a couple months back and I also did catch a quick peek at Venus when it was visible in the sky without the need for s scope at about 5am a few months ago. That was pretty cool.
