Any recommendations for smart phones (not iphone and blackberry)?

Asked by bon (2points) August 3rd, 2009

I am planning to get a smart phone, but I am not a big fan of iphone and blackberry. Is there any good ones out there and what makes them good?

HTC Hero is getting a lot of buzz, maybe that’ll tickle your fancy.

I’ve heard the Palm Pre is going to be huge. Other than that I’m waiting for the next-generation LG Chocolate (BL40). Looks pretty sweet.

Nokia does make some kick-ass mobiles. I was looking into the N97 earlier this year.

In the US your only real choices are:

iPhone
Blackberry
Android
Windows mobile
Palm Pre

Three of these are locked down to carriers at the moment, which will change in 6 months or so for android and palm. If you lock out Blackberry and iPhone and you aren’t with TMobile or Sprint, you’re left with a Windows Mobile phone, which at its current state is a pooooor choice (at least untill WinMo 7 comes out). Android is still a work in progress and I would just not recommend it for another year or so. Your only choice left is a Palm Pre, which is a pretty fantastic phone, but you’d need to be a Sprint customer. My question to you is why not a Blackberry? Go to a store and try out one of the newer OS versions. They are quite amazing devices and aren’t just for “Business Professionals”.

These Blackberries are as follows:

Verizon: Tour
Sprint: Tour
TMobile: Curve 8900
ATT: Bold, Curve 8900

If you’re really against Blackberries, the Palm Pre is IMO the only other choice that is worth any thought. There is however a new android phone from motorola that actually has a keyboard rumored to be coming out for Verizon which looks nice, but again Android is just not at its all right now. My answer after all of this is to get the Palm Pre or give Blackberry another chance.

Also, the Pre should be coming to Verizon in the new year and there’s a new Palm phone coming to ATT at some point called the EOS which is a candybar form factor.

It would help if you said why you’re against BB and iPhone, so that people can help you find the features and policies you’re looking for.

If I had to pick a phone other than the iPhone or Blackberry I would have to say Palm Pre (but there have been a large amount of complaints. 40% of customers returned their phone). I still have yet to touch a working model though. Also the HTC Hero looks good. So does it’s User Interface. Mmm..
