Oh sweet! just dropped my phone in my pool, any way to salvage?

Asked by ABoyNamedBoobs03 (7543points) August 3rd, 2009

it’s a blackberry storm if it makes any difference with the touch screen and all. it was only in there for a couple seconds at the most. my cat like reflexes snatched that sob up before it got half way down the battery is fine, any tips?

take out the batteries, go to the nearest car repair shop and use their compressed air to blow out all the water you can, put it in the oven on the lowest setting with the door cracked over night.

Tomorrow, put the battery back in and see if it works.

Put it in a bag of rice. Rice will absorb the water.

Don’t put it in the microwave unless you want to kill it and get a cool fireworks show.

@PerryDolia Very high tech, sir/madam. Compressed air and ovens. Beat that, pool water!!

I took the battery and SIM out of mine and just used a blow dryer when that happened to me. Left them out for the night, then put it back together in the morning.

By the way, something similar happened to me a little while ago (but not with a cell phone) and I was whining to uberbatman about it. He suggested putting it in a container of rice and the rice will draw the excess moisture out.
OH RATS! @theichibun beat me to it.

@all Danke :). fucking phones… you’d think they’d find a way to water proof the damn things by now.

I did the same thing about a month ago – took the battery out, used a blow drier set on cool to blow all the water out and left it over night. Put it back together the next day, and it worked just fine.

Rice! Cool! Thanks!

Dry it out as best you can, put the battery back in and hope for the best.

Dismantle as much as you can , leave it to air dry or use a 60Watt bulb over night to remove the water .

Here’s some more advice. You’re not alone. I’m on my 3rd phone this year…

First of all, don’t try to start it before you’re sure it’s totally try or there’s a risk that it will shortcircuit.

Remove anything that you can! (Like battery(ies), sim card, antenna etc…). Start the oven and turn it to ~50C and put the phone in the oven for ~1 hour. Let all the parts dry separately for a day or two.

Don’t use a hairdryer or something like that, or some vital components may melt!

My husband dropped his Blackberry in the river. He let it dry out for a couple of days. We thought it was toast. The third or fourth day it worked fine. He didn’t do anything special, but I think the rice idea is a good one.

you’re done.

my oldest son did that a couple years ago. so attached to that damn cell phone with his girlfriend while we were away on vacation down south, that he dived into the pool with the phone in his trunk pocket. all night he desperately tried to dry it out while using his parents’ cell phones to stay connected to the little heifer he is no longer with anyway.

ended up telling phone company it was lost or stolen so he could get another one.

so tried the rice.

it turns on, and can somewhat function, only problems is the touch screen is all misaligned (press the top left corner and it clicks something in the middle, that so of thing) I’m going to give it another day or so to see if it just takes a little bit longer to dry out, but I’m starting to think it might be kaput… thanks for the advice everyone :D
