What guitar should I Buy?

Asked by N0name (180points) August 6th, 2009

I have been playing guitar for about 9 years now, and have finished 6 years of musical school. I always just played classical guitar and fingerstyle. Now I want to buy an electric, but just don’t know what would suit me best. I was thinking of a jazz guitar first, because I will play jazz, blues. But it got me thinking soon, that I will surely want to play some rock to once and a while. So I thought maybe a normal eclectic guitar would do. What do you think?

Go somewhere where there is a decent selection of good vintage guitars and play a number of them. You’ll find something to love.

well just about any guitar should do, but yeah you could just look up some guitar that you like and see their reviews online to see what kind of music it’s made for, for example, dean’s and Ibanez’s are for metal

well it all depends on how much cash you want to spend. Gibsons are obviously very nice guitars, but if you’re looking for something a bit more average to start out with an Epiphone is very solid.

Taylor T5, acoustic electric, nice smooth action, good for acoustic, jazz or rock.

A Gibson ES-335 or a cheap version of a ES-335. What ever you can afford.
Fender Strats can also be used for both Genres.

I am not planing to spend to much money on my first guitar. Need to see how it feels like, and get into it. I already revived some guitars on the Internet. Also playtested some guitars. I liked the jazz guitar that I played, but also was satisfied with an electric fender guitar.

@PerryDolia The Taylor T5 looks great.

9 years is long enough to need a proper guitar by now. If you can afford a Gibson, go for it. I personally love the sound. I’ve got a couple of basic electrics (strat etc) but never play them, but the guitarist in my band has a Les Paul and it sounds amazing (ok, his ability may have something to do with it too).

@Jack79 Yes, ability is key.
I’ve got a nice guitar, but no talent….: sounds terrible.

I would recommend a Fender Telecaster. Fender makes a mexican made one for about $450, which may fit your budget. It’s also an incredibly versatile guitar, good for most genres, and easily upgradable, as far as guitars go.

But are you looking for a solidbody guitar, hollowbody, or semi-hollowbody?

If you like playing jazz, the telecaster is a good choice, but hollowbody Gretschs are possibly your best bet, in my opinion. Just amazing tone, even on the lower end ones.

Here’s links to the guitars I was talking about.

Telecaster
Gretsch

Don’t know if that’s what you want to spend, but those would be good to look at.

I bought the vintage cream colored one when it came out for $589. It should suit your music style marvelously.
