How historically accurate is the TV show "The Tudors"?

It’s not very accurate. For one, Henry was a ginger, and though athletic, much bigger than Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Even the head writer says it’s meant to be an historical soap opera.

I would assume that about any TV series unless I found material saying otherwise.

The show has been heavily criticised by some historians for distorting history for dramatic effect. Not only that the costumes are a mixed bag from various eras, including the Elizabethian era, a quarter century in the future, and even the Victorian era.

However, for the drama and the entertainment value, plus encouraging people to actually research the history, it has received praise.

There is a series of ½ hour programs that are shown on the History Channel called How the Tudors (or Victorians or other eras) Did. It doesn’t focus on the leaders but on how national events affected the lives of people and how people changed the nation.

Any dramatic presentation is going to take a point of view but if you look at a lot of sources you will get a pretty good idea. Also remember that royalty and other powerful people historically don’t think like the common people any more than many powerful people do today..

It sure was fun to watch, though, wasn’t it? When we came to the end of Anne Boleyn, i actually wept real tears, and I probably hadn’t cried over a movie since Bambi.

It may be good entertainment, but it isn’t accurate AT ALL!
