Is it a good idea to change from Vista to windows 7 x64 yet?

Asked by oratio (8940points) September 26th, 2009

I am thinking about running Windows 7 instead of my Vista 64.

I’ve read some reviews doing benchmark tests comparing Win 7, Vista and XP, and it didn’t look like there was a point of switching OS.

• What’s your experience?
• Is there a point of moving to Win 7 yet?

I have been using the beta and RC of Windows 7 for a while now and quite like it. I have also ordered a copy but mainly because back in the early summer MS were offering the full version at a large discount if you pre ordered so it will come in useful the next time I build a new PC.

I probably won’t bother upgrading my current machines though.

I’m on the beta of Win 7 here at work. I’m loving it! It’s actually faster than a similarly configured PC running XP that I had. Also, from what I’ve heard, it’s had orders of magnitude more testing done than Vista ever had so it’s already more stable. Some of the Aero features are nifty, but it’s the stability that’s the real winner. Oh, also some versions will let you virtualize XP in a window to run legacy apps, really nice for an enterprise environment and transparent to the user.
