99/26=3.8
26/3.8=6.8
.8*26=21
letter 21 is U
U of course

oh i don’t think I read that right…lol

Your question lacks clarity. What do you mean by “a word?”

SpatzieLover's avatar

ninety nine you asked for a word equal to 99, right?

jdogg's avatar

Like for instance: dog d=4 o=15 g=7 dog=26

jdogg's avatar

Correct, a word that equals 99

jdogg's avatar

Does everyone understand what I mean?

SpatzieLover's avatar

I do…I’m using fingers to count my words tho ;)

Iiiiiiiiiii! (9×11 = 99)

The word is Worry.

W 23 o 15 r 18 r 18 Y 25

I do a lot of it. :-)

jdogg's avatar

@Darwin, you are a saint!!!

markyy's avatar

How did you do that? Were you just lucky? Took a 100 tries? I want to know :)

jdogg's avatar

I have a list of 112 different words that DON’T work, finally a solution:) thanks a ton!

Darwin's avatar

How did I do that? I just started with a word that would use fairly high-count letters so I would only have to add or subtract a small amount. I started with yours, which gives 98, then switched to sorry ( 95) and then went to worry, which works.

So there is no scientific / mathematic explanation behind it, that’s one weird homework assignment. Doesn’t make it less impressive though, good job.

SpatzieLover's avatar

@markyy I don’t think it’s homework…just for kicks & giggles (and brain health, maybe)

markyy's avatar

@SpatzieLover Oh, and here I thought I was weird. Making a list of 112 words for kicks & giggles sure does sound exciting, lol.

I do like the word (creature) :

Hemiramphus

patg7590's avatar

@Darwin so you guessed and got it on your third try?

wow lol

jrpowell's avatar

Damn phoenyx. Is the source for that on your github account? I’m curious to see it.

phoenyx's avatar

@johnpowell:
I’ll add it. It was really simple. I just went through all the words in /usr/share/dict/words

jdogg's avatar

it was for extra credit

Darwin's avatar

So how do I get the credit? And what should I do with it?

SpatzieLover's avatar

@Darwin You get an extra serving of dessert at the cafeteria tomorrow ;0)

Darwin's avatar

Oh. It’s going to be rhubarb. I am not all that fond of rhubarb.

janbb's avatar

@Darwin Maybe it will be a nice jelly roll??

Darwin's avatar

The cafeteria ladies said it would be rhubarb. They may wear funny hair nets low on their foreheads and serve boring food, but they are rarely untruthful.

When my son was in first grade, his teacher gave him special homework assignments that involved turning words into a sum by the reverse process: he had to look up the value of each letter in the word and then add them up. The correct answer for each word was a number. He enjoyed the challenge.

janbb's avatar

Maybe the cafeteria ladies are just keeping the jelly roll for themselves and will whip out the rhubarb when they see you coming.

DominicX's avatar

Now you got me adding up different words and names to see the numerical value…lol

My last name adds up to 98 and the Polish spelling yields 99. :P

kevbo's avatar

FYI, this is part of an ancient practice known as Gematria.

Jeruba's avatar

Yes, except that it wasn’t strictly a linear a b c = 1 2 3 valuation, and the resulting numbers were thought to have special meaning or significance. Remember when Dionne Warwick added an E to her last name so it would come out different in numerology?

My brain hurts.
