Will there ever be a truly useful purpose of Augmented Reality?

Asked by buckyboy28 (4961points) October 19th, 2009

Augmented Reality is currently used for placing virtual images on live video streams which can react with the person in the video. While it is certainly cool, I am wondering if it is actually going to serve a purpose in the future, or if it is just going to be a novelty as it currently is.

Perhaps in the future it will allow those confined to a wheelchair or with handicaps to be able to experience a normal albiet virtual life.

The original Star Trek series had an episode entitled ” The Menagerie” that told a tale of such a case. While it is fiction now in the future perhaps it will be real.

Simple example: I look at my lawn and the gas lines, electric lines, etc. are overlaid. Now I know where I can and can’t dig.

Will there ever be? Yes.

This looks like it could come in handy.

You could also use GPS without having to look at the little screen – the arrows would just be overlaid onto the world.
