Do you find this offensive?

Asked by buckyboy28 (4961points) October 28th, 2009

Apparently the catholic church isn’t too thrilled about last Sunday’s episode of “Curb your Enthusiasm”, in which Larry starts taking a pill to increase his urine flow, which causes some unfortunate splash black on a painting of Jesus, which looked like a tear. He wasn’t making fun of Jesus, but rather making fun of the people who believe they see Jesus in everyday occurrences (in toast, in mold, etc).

As a fan of the show who has watched every episode, I know that Larry makes fun of everyone. It is why I watch the show. He is a Jew, as am I, and when he makes anti-semitic jokes regarding Hitler or the Holocaust, I am never offended. (There was once an entire episode which was about a Holocaust survivor and a Survivor from the show arguing about who had it worse).

I tend to believe that the people who are offended have never watched the show before, so they do not know that this is the nature of the show, and is not the first time that the Catholic Church has been poked fun of on the show (see episode: The Christ Nail)

I don’t watch “Curb your Enthusiasm” because I find the whole thing offensive. Does the fact that they didn’t watch it, or the fact that everything about the show is offensive make this episode any less offensive?

It’s offensive, they have a right to complain about it, but it’s not going to change the show or it’s ratings.

I hate the show, but my wife actually watched this episode. I thought it was funny but a bit crass. I’m okay with that.

I love the show. Everything is offensive and awkward, thats the point.

@gussnarp I certainly feel that they have the right to feel that it is offensive… I just think it is a bit strange that they were (openly) never offended when “Curb” poked fun of “The Passion” before.

A bit.
Entertainment today is a shame.
Except Stephen Colbert. ♥

@buckyboy28 Well, this actually gets into some interesting theological implications. That whole “no graven images” and “no idolatry” thing in the bible has been interpreted by some groups to mean no pictures of Jesus. If peeing on a picture of Jesus is more offensive than other mocking of Christianity, it implies that the picture of Jesus is a “graven image” and that those offended are practicing idolatry. Maybe the offended Catholics should ask themselves if they are sinning?

buckyboy28's avatar

@gussnarp I never thought about that, but that is an excellent point.

I don’t really find most things offensive. Anybody has a right to be offended, but whatever. The show has a right to do what they want. From what I’ve seen of CYE, I liked it.

@buckyboy28 Personally, I do not care. I have a remote control and a sense of humor

Generally speaking the Catholic Church would prefer that parishioners only watch Catholic programming. This is a Catholic “group” saying this, not the Pope.

troubleinharlem's avatar

I’m pretty sure the Pope wouldn’t watch it either.
Secretly, we’re best buds.

It’s a joke, quit being so sensitive. If you don’t enjoy it, don’t laugh and don’t watch the show. Please quit crying every time something is too offensive for you, just ignore it and let the rest of us have a laugh.

The world could use a bit more laughter, and less crybabies.

@buckyboy28 I just read the full article you linked to, they seem to be arguing that Larry has singled out Christianity and Catholicism to make fun of, and they are certainly wrong about that.

I think it is funny!

When he has to grab the girls belly fat to avoid falling.
Now that is offensive!

Definitely funny.

That was the funniest half hour of Larry David I have ever seen! We’ve been watching the show, and in past seasons, it has been very boring. This season it’s better, but that show was really funny, and I’m a person who hardly ever laughs out loud at things on the TV. I forget what they said at the very end, but the wife and I were laughing for a couple of minutes after it was over.

Was I offended? No way in hell! Should the Church be offended? They seem to make a living out of getting real tight-assed about trivial things.

gussnarp's avatar

@mammal I think that was a great answer, but I’m not sure.

I don’t watch “Curb your Enthusiasm” either (I don’t even know when it’s on or what channel shows it). It sounds to me as if it was a bit crass, but still acceptable as a form of humor. I live in a part of the world where folks find visions of the Virgin of Guadalupe on almost anything, including tortillas and corn chips, so I do think it is funny.

Unlike Andres Serrano’s Piss Christ, it is a joke, son. Laugh or ignore it.

casheroo's avatar

I found it silly, but still funny.

what I want to know is if it really is an offense to take too many napkins!

ubersiren's avatar

@Darwin : Yeah, that’s how I felt when I read about it… If he had intentionally peed on it as a way of disrespect, then I would’ve felt offended, even though I’m not a Christian. I don’t feel that religions themselves are subject to ridicule. Instead it was just a funny take on a fictional accident. From the asker’s description it was more making fun of the people who could be considered “extremists” or irrational.

I’ve seen the show a few times. Personally it hasn’t offended me. I’m just not that sensitive of a person that I would let a silly show upset me. So many shows these days contain material that can potentially offend people. To let it truly bother you is a little ridiculous. If you’re offended, don’t watch/support the show. Just change the damn channel.

Jesus told me that he thought that it was one of the funniest episodes yet.

I think people need to settle down. it’s a TV show, the world will move on without people complaining about something that was meant to be funny.

a little off topic, but it really annoys me how easily offended by the slightest little things people get today. Relax, take a deep breath, and ask yourselves if you could physically survive if you didn’t bitch and moan to anyone who will listen about whatever phrase or 30 minutes of tv that you didn’t like. If the answer is yes, then don’t bitch and moan. It’s simple, it’s easy, and it’s always worked well for me.

Jack79's avatar

I have not seen the show so I don’t know the details, but by the way you describe it, it sounds like one of those controversial things (especially the urinating part) that some people might easily find offensive, and I can see why. I would not personally mind, exactly because of the reasons you give (I found “Ahmed the dead terrorist” non-offensive because the guy also made fun of Jews, Americans and Catholic priests in the same act, whereas if he hadn’t, it would just be anti-muslim propaganda). I think Larry’s past shows are his alibi in this case, but still, I can easily understand a Christian getting offended, especially since the comedian is not a Christian himself.

Second opinion after viewing the episode: I’m pretty sure the exact same script could have been done slightly more tastefully. It’s a good idea, but I think it actually aims to provoke, whereas it could make the same point and get the same laughs in a better way.

I don’t really follow the show, but I did see the episode in question and I thought it was hilarious. For those who are offended by anything they see on television, they have this thing on every remote called a channel selector. I’d advise using it.
