Do we have any computer geeks here? =) What's the best brand for mobos?

Asked by allergictoeverything (105points) November 6th, 2009

I’m looking into building my FIRST ever computer this Christmas, but I’m still pretty indecisive about my parts. Brand-wise, which mobo would you suggest? I’m leaning towards ASUS =)

My last 3 motherboards have been Asus models and I have always had good performance from them.

Sure ASUS works. I don’t bother much with motherboards. I pick out the GFX card, CPU and RAM and get the motherboard that can deliver.

Also going with ASUS.

They tested them and everything works well together.

I’m leaning more towards ASUS ‘cause their boards look SOOOOO amazing. Especially with comparison to other boards like….......Gigabye. Which are really plain and unappealing.

Check out Tom’s Hardware for more data.
There’s a lot of useful information there.

Frankly, I’m not too fond of Tom’s Hardware. Their layout is much too confusing. And they’re not so much a DIY kinda website, as opposed to a news website for the latest computer hardware.

Asus is good. My best machine, however, admittedly had a SOYO motherboard.

allergictoeverything's avatar

lol Sorry, I’ve never heard of SOYO. Where’s it manufactured?

@allergictoeverything That was years ago… the comment probably isn’t even relevant any longer. I’ve long since given up the time and money it takes to build my own and gone with pre-built ones… i’m ok with it

That’s a shame! Although I’ve only become fascinated with computer parts within the last 2 years, you could see that hardware’s come a LONG way. The aesthetics for certain computer part manufacturers (ie. Thermaltake, Coolermaster, Antec) are becoming increasingly ridicccccccccculously nice.

ASUS is really the only brand I ever hear about (as far as mobos are concerned, at least).

@allergictoeverything Being married with 3 young boys tends to take away a lot of my research time and money. It’s just a matter of laziness/simplicity to go with a cheaper, pre-built one that also comes with a flat screen monitor (which would have cost a lot more if not bundled with it)

if you have lots of money to spend, get a Tyan Thunder

Even though on my last ASUS the chipset fan fried due to a manufacturing error (and I took my chances with it), my next motherboard could easily be another ASUS. I don’t pretend to know everything there is about hardware, so I always look around the web. There is a Dutch guide which is like the holy grail (I let Google translate it for you), a budget pc guide and a gamers pc guide.

Unless I find a shitload of money on the street, it might be whatever Apple puts in their computers.

Oh wow, that translates awfully. Drop me a pm if you have trouble understanding something on that site, and need it translated.

Because I’ve been broke for a while, I’ve had the computer I’m on now for 5 years, and just this morning I was grateful that it’s still reliably on the job. And what mobo is on this PC? Asus!

Ever since I gotten custom PC builds, I’ve used Asus mobos and they have been workhorses. My computers at my last job had MSI and Gigabyte and, meh. Actually, the PC I had there using an MSI board was awful and went down at least once a month.
