What is the real goal of the game "Monopoly"?

Asked by Dog (25152points) November 29th, 2009

I purchased the computer version of the old board classic game Monopoly and have been playing against the AI. (computer opponent)

The first two games I lost and my spouse then decided to coach me on my third game where I already had purchased and hotel-upped Broadway and Park Place.

His advice was merely to crush my opponent to win which I did with luck of the dice.

However the win felt hollow to me as I had not actually achieved a “monopoly” only having Park Place and Broadway as a set. Several times I wanted to swap with the AI to gain a true monopoly of property ownership but my spouse was adamant that this was not how the game was played and the goal was to bankrupt the other player(s).

So I won with 45M in Monopoly money unspent with really seemed like a shame to me when I could have tried to barter my opponents properties off him and then built on them. It was nice having that much money even it is was only Monopoly money.

I always felt the goal of the game was to get the most properties and hotels (hence the name.) So what does the collective think?

I have just been out-nerded.. {{{{{hugs}}}}} That isn’t easy.

It’s both. By getting a monopoly, you will end up bankrupting the other players, one by one, until only you remain.

And anyways, I think you get a monopoly in the game simply by having all the properties of a color group. If you have more than one, then you have several monopolies.

The goal? To be bored to death, honestly.

But in terms of winning, humiliating your opponents as you suck away their funds while your “empire” grows rapidly like a malignant tumor.

Obviously the goal is to bankrupt the other players and to win the game. That said, building monopolies and out foxing your opponent in deals to gain, or potentially gain, monopolies is the general course of action to do so. Playing against only one player doesn’t work that well and thus you have your situation…a hollow victory over a bot.

The goal is to not take the name so literally?

To destroy Friendships and break apart familys! Seriously I stopped playing that game years ago I’m just to competitive

It’s not an entirely realistic model not unlike the world we live in. So you have big buildings with empty wasted space. Who’s going to pay the rent after you take everyone’s money?
@sjmc1989 hey swea pea..

You bankrupt them, start buying their properties so they have some cash flow, then bankrupt them again, then buy some more of their properties…then bankrupt them again! In the end you have ALL the money and ALL the properties!

To actually finish the game without flipping the board off the table.

Your goal is to “own it all”. When you bankrupt your opponent, all of their property goes to you. Therefore, once you’ve bankrupted all your opponents, you will in fact own all the properties (unless by some chance you manage to win the game before all the properties have been bought from the bank)

IT’S TRUE!! The love of money IS the root of all evil! It makes good, sweet people like @rangerr go psychokitty!

To kill time. I’ve never played a game to completion. And perhaps somewhere near the end I will just stop caring and let others win. Now I actually have a pretty good attention span but at some point it stops becoming fun to me.

Although for a technical answer I think @MrItty hit it on the head.

Too funny! Great responses everyone.
I so rarely play games that it just seemed mean forcing a computer into bankruptcy.
I think I need to get out more. :)

I’ve been playing that game all day! I was actually playing so much that I went on Fluther to get away, but it keeps following me!

I’m surprised that you could have won with only Board Walk and Park Place, even if they were all pimped out. Because aren’t the odds of your opponent landing on one of the two way against you? Also, you have to remember the whole “spending money to earn money” thing.

@Dog LOL! Could be!

@Val123
Have you ever see unrented property sitting idle?

Val123's avatar

@SeventhSense Well, OK. You can keep that! (Remember this favor, now!)

@Val123
Well I’ll trade you that plus Marvin Gardens and Baltic for Park Ave….:)

Val123's avatar

Nope. Actually, I stole Marvin Gardens and Baltic for Park Ave from you when you weren’t looking… and now you’re bankrupt and I have all your stuff, including Marvin Gardens and Baltic for Park Ave AND all your money, all your cats and furniture and clothes, but out of the goodness of my heart I’m letting you keep the prime real estate you pictured.

Val123's avatar

@SeventhSense Oh alright! I’ll split everything with you 50/50! (Now I feel a lot better about myself!)

I’d say it is to end up with the most properties and money. But in the end the game makes best friends ‘enemies’. joking :-) But it takes so damn long to play. The players are tired and hungry by the end.
