How can I make my dorm feel more like home?

Asked by DarlingNikci (15points) December 3rd, 2009

I’m going to college and I want to make it feel more like home. What would be cool ways to decorate and make it cozy?

Maybe some posters or wall hanging, or a rug depending on what kind of space you’re working with. My roommate and I got ourselves a waffle maker.

My kids took a painting I had to hang on their wall.

I agree with @sliceswiththings. Christmas lights and houseplants are excellent. Everyone compliments me on the Christmas light arrangement in my room. If your room has hard floor, get a rug. Mine has carpet, but it’s thin carpet, so I got a rug anyway. :P Also, plants help with feng shui.

Put up lots of pictures and posters. I put up a bunch of B&W pictures that I took along with my high school class panoramic picture and various other posters and things on my bulletin board, like that Nevada license plate I bought in Virginia City.

I also brought a bunch of doohickeys from my room at home, like the wooden bank that I made in woodshop and my red ruby (fake—that I got in Virginia City. VC is excellent for doohickeys), and my mini USB fan and Playboy shot glass. :P

You are going away. This is the time when you find yourself in the position to make things how you want want them. Embrace the change. You are on your own now.

Enjoy the freedom.

I brought a big hook rug I’d done when I was 10 and hung it on the wall. It was in warm colours and made the industrial gray/white walls less dour. I put up photos of my pals and myself. I brought my favourite utensils, blanket and my Rubik’s cube, and got a little wool throw rug for near the bed.

Frame any artwork or posters you hang. It makes a world of difference. And blankets are a plus if you’re in a cold state (I dealt with Madison, WI’s cold cold winters…right on the lake).

Posters, pictures, play music, throw clothes everywhere, trash the place?

If you have a big enough room get an armchair or a couch!

@aprilsimnel woot woot! Good to know us Madtown residents end up everywhere. I’m a J-schooler and Comm Arts grad, you?

any posters, rugs, paintings, pictures to cover up the cinderblock walls and drab floors.
also soft lights like string or lamps will make it feel cozier. fluorescents aren’t very inviting :)

Take things from home to remind you. Take your bed blanket and pillow. Have picture frames of you and your family. Have a lot of color so it makes you happier. Talk to your family often.
