A dream sequence: Can someone help me figure this out?

Asked by Sonnerr (588points) December 10th, 2009

The other night I had a dream about saying “f*** it.” And I flew to Hawaii (lahaina, Maui, HI). As I got there, time passed very rapidly. What ended up happening was I was homeless and had no friends or money. A year passed and I was applying for a job at this factory and the weird part was that my family, the ones that I have left to find a better life of living on the beach and smoking weed and what have you, was visiting the factory because they were on a tour of it.

Long story short, as they were talking to the CEO I was there and we talked and I was so happy to see them, but then for some reason I had to use the restroom and then I told them I’d be right back. When I got back they were gone. I walked around the factory complex three times and couldn’t find them. I walked inside the factory, and I was going up a staircase, and I heard someone behind me. Curious I turned around and it was my late Grandfather, I asked him what he was doing and he replied:

“nothing, I’m just here. What are you doing?”

I told him that I couldn’t find everyone and then he said:

“Well, if it doesn’t work, try doing it backward. It worked for me.”

At that point I turned around and I said that I loved him and he was gone. I took his advice and returned outside. I walked around the factory in the opposite direction that I had been previously walking and half way around, my family was standing right there. Does any of that make sense? I Understand that dreams are just neurons being fired at a rapid pace in REM sleep. But to be visited by someone who was important to me(for the first time) was kind of weird. Any ideas?

Can’t help you figure that out much, but it sounds like a good idea for a movie.

The only person who can make sense of dreams is yourself as only you have access to your memories which dreams are manipulating. If you want to understand it you’ll need to draw connections to real life events.

Just a shame that there’s a problem in a lot of these memories will be unconscious so you’ll have next to no hope of fully understanding any dream.

Oh and to clarify some misconceptions about the reason for dreams: dreaming occurs outside REM sleep as well; and in my opinion the best dream theories are those that take dreams as a collaboration of events that have happened recently with existing memories in order to create additional meaning and information. And “Random firing” could just be fMRIs/EEGs measuring detecting this process.

im going to refer you to this site – because it truly is a very amazing idea.

and the truth is.. dreams are truly whatever you make of them – trapped thoughts of the unconscious.

I am no dream therapist or anything but I’ll give it a bash.

Are you missing your Grandfather as there are things happening in your life and you would really like to have his advice/ input on some things and you could always rely on him?

Maybe there are situations at the moment that are bothering you, job family? where you aren’t sure what to do and maybe you are being told to go back to the past and take a look at what is there as the answers are there.
Kind of like if you loose something we are told to sit calmly and close our eyes (like cognitive therapy) and go through it in our minds eye to retrace our steps….......

Maybe this is where the answers are to whatever it is that’s bothering you.

Are you thinking of or have you applied for a new job/ position elswhere and you are worried about what your family will think or they will not be as close anymore and they may judge or not stand by your decisions??

Like I said I don’t know I’m just seeing it as you have written it I may be off track but whatever the outcome I hope it was of some help in some way x

You want to strike out on your own, but part of you recognizes that you need to take a lot of things into consideration. Your family supports you now, and you shouldn’t take that for granted. Also, if you aren’t careful, and take care of your family ties, you could end up severing them for a long, long time.

Are there stressers like that in your family now? You want to do something that they don’t want you to do? Are their arguments making sense, but you don’t want to hear it?

I’m sure someone probably can. Stay calm .. the police will arrive shortly.

I don’t really pay much attention to dreams, but when you remember them so vividly it is best (in my opinion) to look at what in your life the dream might coincide with. Personally going to try a new life can be invigorating, but I highly value family, and wouldn’t alienate myself from them. So, if you plan on leaving I’d be certain to keep in touch. With the possibility of disaster in a new environment (as in your dream ie. no money or friends) that tie to your family will lend you strength. As for the grandfather I imagine your dream is saying “Hey you know what to do, so I’ll throw someone you respect in to verify it.” I am not any type of professional tho, but I hope this helps.
