Is the U2 song "Stuck in A Moment" an effective argument against suicide?

Asked by forceps (13points) December 13th, 2009

Bono has said that the lyrics to Stuck in a Moment (youtube) represent the conversation he wishes he could have had with Michael Hutchence to try to persuade him that life is worth living. Do you think these lyrics would be persuasive in that respect?

I’m not afraid
Of anything in this world
There’s nothing you can throw at me
That I haven’t already heard
I’m just trying to find
A decent melody
A song that I can sing
In my own company

I never thought you were a fool
But darling, look at you. Ooh.
You gotta stand up straight, carry your own weight
‘Cause tears are going nowhere baby

You’ve got to get yourself together
You’ve got stuck in a moment
And now you can’t get out of it
Don’t say that later will be better
Now you’re stuck in a moment
And you can’t get out of it

I will not forsake
The colors that you bring
The nights you filled with fireworks
They left you with nothing
I am still enchanted
By the light you brought to me
I listen through your ears
Through your eyes I can see

You are such a fool
To worry like you do.. Oh
I know it’s tough
And you can never get enough
Of what you don’t really need now
My, oh my

You’ve got to get yourself together
You’ve got stuck in a moment
And you can’t get out of it
Oh love, look at you now
You’ve got yourself stuck in a moment
And you can’t get out of it
Oh lord look at you now
You’ve got yourself stuck in a moment
And you cant gt out of it

I was unconscious, half asleep
The water is warm ‘til you discover how deep
I wasn’t jumping, for me it was a fall
It’s a long way down to nothing at all

You’ve got to get yourself together
You’ve got stuck in a moment
And you can’t get out of it
Don’t say that later will be better
Now you’re stuck in a moment
And you can’t get out of it

And if the night runs over
And if the day won’t last
And if your way should falter
Along this stony pass

It’s just a moment
This time will pass

It is difficult to get someone who is in pain and has lost all hope to get mentally out of that dark place. In this respect I think music make a great conduit. The lyrics are, in my opinion, well written and a respectable effort to try to deflect a potential suicide. It aknowledges the listeners pain and offers hope of relief.

There are a number of songs – and this is one of them – that I listen to when I need that reminder that “all things must pass”. I spent most of my life in varying states if depression and melancholy, and I truly would get stuck there.

I first remember praying as hard as I could that I would not wake up the night before my 12th birthday. I was raised Christan, and at that point, I was a believer, and I prayed to god that 12 years of this hell was enough, and I asked him to mercifully take me from it. I suppose the fact that those prayers went unanswered is why I stopped believing within the couple years that followed.

I was always chicken, though; and never made a serious attempt until about 6 years ago. Only the sad realization that I was the sanest person in my son’s life made me stick my finger down my throat. I chose to become the parent he deserved, and the role-model he could look up to.

Since then, I have worked very hard to scratch and claw my way out if that place, and not not allow myself to wallow in it’s twistedly comfortable familiarity when dealing with adversity. It has not been easy, and I have been tested this year.

Just a few weeks ago, a close friend was on the brink, and she seriously had us worried. It took a few days of talking before she agreed to see me, and finally to bring her back to her house. I spoke of those dark times in my own life, and how I’ve learned and grown stronger for having dealt with them. We’ve only known each other a couple years, so she never saw the person I was. She is also more than 10 years younger than I. It seemed to help her to see that I had faced similar circumstances, and have been able to overcome it. Several other friends opened up about their experiences as well.

So I think that it can be beneficial to remind someone who is feeling empty and desperate that many have felt that way, but have continued on and found joy in good times and inner peace in bad times.
It is just a moment. One day, you will look back and see how far you’ve come, and marvel at your resilience.

@hearkat What other songs do you listen to in your down moods? I am always on the lookout for these to help me too.
