Should people who mistreat animals be penalized much great than they are now?

Asked by Oxymoron (1239points) December 15th, 2009

What do you think about getting harsher laws for people who mistreat animals? Not anything like the death penalty, but something like ten years in prison. I believe that animals should be treated like valued life forms and that animals should not be discarded like trash. What are your views of animal rights?

I believe the current punishment is enough, but those who commit crimes against animals when they are younger should undergo special therapy. hurting animals at a young age is a big sign of a sociopath or worse.

Otherwise, I know that the Karma train will be around….I can live with that. No bad deed goes punished in that sense. And it doesn’t cost taxpayers a dime.

DEFINATELY ! I think that there should be MUCH stiffer penalties for those who abuse animals than there currently are….

And; stop this “Probation” and “Parole” Bull Sh** ! Let them serve at least 75% of the sentence before releasing them ala Michael Vick. He should STILL be in Prison…..

Good luck ever seeing that happen!...shit, I can get drunk, plow into a schoolbus full of children killing 36 out of 44 on it and still only get the maximum of 10 years!

Yes.

I say that we tie them (cruel pet owners) out by a tree with 6 foot lead in freezing weather, no protection for their feet and have their food and (frozen) water dish about 10 feet away from them, so, they can’t reach it.

I saw a poor Lab go through all of that last winter. And, his owner was a cop. The cop was an ass, and we contacted Animal Control.

YES I DO!
Here I go comparing animals to children again, nobody argue with me on this shit because I won’t argue back and you will just waste your time.

I think they should get the same punishment as people that murder someone. The animals have parents as well and how would a person feel if some jackass killed/hunted their baby just for the fun of it? The same way an animal would feel. Just because the animals don’t speak doesn’t mean they don’t hurt. So yes I do believe they should get harsher punishments than just probation or getting fined. I don’t agree with people getting out of punishment by paying, they should do the good amount of time in jail that they deserve.

@Tink1113 YES; I totally agree with You !! What a shame that the law is the way it is… and most folks accept it .

Yes I do…especially the folks that take in a pet and neglect most of it’s needs. Makes me sick. The punishment for such crimes?? Tit for tat is the way I see it. If there is no food for the animal as a result of a neglectful owner, then I think “starvation camps” for these perps would teach the perfect lesson.

In Aberta, someone dragged a big dog behind his pickup. People saw and phoned him in. The problem was the dog’‘s barking

when you abuse something that does not even have the mental capacity to know its being abused, i think an eye for an eye is in order.

i mean it does depend, im not saying we should throw a 4 year old kid in to a tree if he does that to a cat. but i think if you are 18 or older, and know what you where doing, then you should be given a punishment in kind. i know its a bit of an extreme position to hold, but really i cant feel any pity for some of these people. i would have no problem if a seal cluber should happen to be clubed about a bit.

Haven’t we been told that people who hurt animals will have no problem hurting you.

thriftymaid's avatar

The current laws are sufficient in my opinion.

thriftymaid's avatar

@Tink1113. You’ve kind of lost perspective here.

Ah, I see someone didn’t read the the first half of my post. Oh well. You have your opinion and I have mine.

I believe that if anyone intentionally hurts or abuses an animal, which is just a defenseless as a child, yes, their punishment should be much harsher than what it typically is. Many animal abusers get slapped on the wrist, are given no punishment or therapy, and continue to abuse. Their abuse generally escalates, as statistics prove, and they move on to people eventually. Anything innocent that can not defend itself needs someone to stand up for them, not ignore abuse. Animal or child, there is no difference in my mind.

What is also needed better enforcement of existing laws. So many incidences of animal neglect and abuse go unpunished because there simply are not enough animal enforcement officers.

I also feel parole is a strange concept. If the sentence for a crime is 10 years then 10 years should be served. If the crime only deserves 7.5 years, then make that the sentence in the first place.

When you think about it, we’re just intelligent animals with a warped sense of humor.

Things need to be kept in perspective. Rapists for example deserve more prison time and so do murderers. But mistreating animals on purpose is a serious crime. Species-appropriate care is also very important, and this requires education.

The big topics matter as well. Man-made contribution to climate change is a large-scale mechanism to mistreat animals in a very cruel way, because they lose their ecosystems. They can’t adapt in time. Many animals will starve and die, some species will go extinct. I’m not just talking about polar bears here. Just look at the oceans. Corals reefs are threatened by global climate change and this will disrupt entire food chains. Greatly reduced biodiversity threatens the entire planet.

I think so.

Penalties are not harsh enough, remember that Animals are Little People in fur coats!

jamcanfi74's avatar

YES!!!!!!!!!! I think anyone who mistreats an animal should get the same if not more punnishment as someone that kills a person. Or here is an idea, you get done to u whatever u did to that poor animal. If you abused them, someone gets to abuse you, wheather that is not feeding you or hitting you or even killing you. Do onto others should apply to animals also.
