Does the President of the United States have a military uniform?

Asked by Maximillian (948points) December 23rd, 2009

I was reading the other day that it is “technically” improper for any ranking officer to salute without his uniform. The article said this also applies to the Commander in Chief, the President. So, my question is: if he is supposed to salute without a uniform, does that mean the President has a uniform?

Absolutely not. This is to reinforce the idea that the Commander in Chief is a civilian, and not a general or admiral. The US military answers to a civilian commander, which is just the way we want it.

If we stop wanting it that way, I’ll stop wanting to be here.

Quote:

Salutes must be rendered and returned to all members of the Uniformed Services: The Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Public Health Service, and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

If two officers or an officer and enlisted member approach with the intent of conversing, salutes are exchanged and then also after the conversation is completed. Forgetting to salute after conversation has ended is a common mistake. It is the junior person’s responsibility to initiate this courtesy prior to departing just as the junior person should salute if passing someone senior to them.

Saluting when not in uniform and uncovered is not usually performed by members of the Naval Services. You may see this practice in the Army and/or the Air Force. If you are saluted and you are not in uniform or in uniform and not covered, tradition dictates that you do not salute. Instead you may great the person saluting you with “Good Morning”, “Good Afternoon”, or “Good Evening” depending on the situation. If you approach someone who is senior to you and you are in civilian attire, you do not salute. Instead, you may say “Good Morning Sir or Ma’am” depending on the situation.

Why should he? the sitting president has never been in the military and honestly, it would be a slap in the face to those men and women that have died attempting to preserve the integrity and freedom of America.

I think Obama just uses his old Black Panther’s Uniform.

Yes, the one he wore at age 10 in Kansas. You know, the one his white mum gave him.~

Ok, ok, I don’t like Obama either, but please, nothing like this. I like the answers. Now, not that I discredit any of you, but are any of you out there military or ex-military?

Getting back to the question, I believe the president of the US is saluted because he out ranks everyone but he is still a civilian. I think it is more of a respect thing. I think they can only wear a uniform if they served in the military and retired as an officer and the uniform they would wear is from the branch of service they served under.
There is one thing I am certain of. People should stick to the topic. No where does this question ask, What is your opinion about Obama? If you want your opinion heard on that topic, I believe someone already asked it on Fluther.

[mod says] Let’s stick to the topic folks. Thanks!

Actually Max, my husband just said as Commander and Chief, even if he was prior service he would never wear a military uniform because he is already on top. It would be alike a General wearing an enlisted uniform. The general would be out of uniform. So as Commander and Chief even if he were ever a military man he would never wear the uniform again, also he represents all branches of service. Just so you know. My husband is retired military. Oh, and he said that the President is an exception to the saluting rule about uniforms.

@Pandora Good answer. That does it for me. Thanks.

The president does not have a military uniform.
Surprising that no one mentioned that the president saluting before and after entering Airforce One and Marine One was started by Reagan. No president ever saluted a person in uniform prior to Reagan. If a president decided not to salute it would be the right thing to do since the only salute for a person not in uniform is the right hand over the heart with exception to Vets not in uniform with cover during the raising, lowering and passing of the US Flag. (USA-Flag-Site.org) facts do matter.

Just because the thread became active again and popped up in front of me, I seem to recall that former military men in the US who run for President are required to resign their commissions in order to serve as civilians only. For example, Eisenhower and Grant, to name two examples (and I would imagine Jackson as well), were prohibited from holding military rank AND being president.

I wouldn’t want it any other way.

But did you know Washington donned his uniform (as Commander of the Continental Army) to lead in the putting down of the Whiskey Rebellion, though it was ended before Washington arrived at the battle location? And George W. Bush donned a uniform to land on an aircraft carrier while president.
