If you’re aiming for a career as a Parisian panhandler, I think you’ve go the knack for it, and you’ll only need to learn a few phrases! Good luck!

If somebody can help me to learn French I can help them with Spanish or English

It’s a strech but you could use google translator to learn writen french and then practice with a pen pal

No experience with it myself, but I’ve heard from several people that Rosetta Stone is a great way to learn a language.

If you’re serious about learning a new language, I suggest you enroll in a class. A second option would be a language exchange with someone, where you help them practice English (or any other language you may know) for their French- a free and fun way to gain practice in a foreign language :) Online learning won’t get you too far, you will need to engage in conversation with someone.

@cesarpernia: I am delighted that you want to learn a new language. Don’t forget to work on your English, please. (Start by reminding yourself of what a sentence is and what an interrogative sentence is.)

I don’t think I’ve been a member of this site for more than a week and I already feel like I want to become a moderator. He asked for advice on how he can learn french for free online. So far he has been told to use Rosetta Stone ($200+) from one member, discouragement that “online learning won’t get [him] too far” from another, gotten some quip about being a Parisian panhandler, and then gailcalled is telling him to work on his ENGLISH? How does any of this help him at all?

Anyway, on to actually answering your question @cesarpernia -

I would recommend clicking around the FSI language courses website, where they can teach you some very basic French for free. Here is the link: http://fsi-language-courses.org/Content.php?page=French . This place is awesome, and has downloads that you can put right on your IPod or burn on a CD.

Once you have a basic grasp on some of the fundementals, I would highly suggest getting on LiveMocha (http://www.livemocha.com/). Once you sign up, you can find “pen-pal” type friends to chat with and practice your conversational skills. It’s free, and in exchange your partners get to practice their Spanish or English with you. It’s a great concept, sort of like Facebook – but for people who want to practice different languages.

If you’re more of a visual learner, this French in Action video series is free and also a bit helpful. http://www.kk.org/cooltools/archives/000521.php

Hope this helps.

@peyope I understand what you’re saying, but hey- people are suggesting that they couldn’t find anything online for free, but if he had the money, maybe Rosetta Stone is better. People can put in suggestions of what might be more effective. Deleting their answer won’t help.

I can add my recommendation to peyope’s suggestion of the French in Action videos. They are hilariously dated, but very entertaining and effective.
