What's the best smart comedy film you've seen?

Asked by Christian95 (3260points) January 7th, 2010

I want to see a relaxing movie that will make me laugh, but I don’t want to see a stupid comedy where everybody gets hurt in funny ways.

I really like “The 40 year old virgin”. Perhaps because it deals with a human kind of issue that many can relate to and yet with great deal of maturity and humour without banalizing or petronizing.

Grumpy Old Men
Waking Ned Devine
Eagle vs. Shark

Oh, d00d. You want Christopher Guest, then. All but his last mockumentary had me rolling.

This Is Spinal Tap (thought he only acted in this one)
The Princess Bride (ditto)
Waiting For Guffman
Best In Show
A Mighty Wind

Anything Woody Allen has done.

“Sleeper” is on the top of my list followed with “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?”

I really enjoyed Ghost Town. I’m thoroughly convinced that Ricky Gervais is the funniest man on the planet, and he does it all without dick jokes or the stupid humor that Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey etc., etc. use.

@aprilsimnel – Yes, all those movies with Christopher Guest are great!!

My second vote is for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and no, not just because Jeff Goldblum is in it.

The Life Aquatic is good.

Wes Anderson’s movies inn general might be a good choice. I personally love The Royal Tenenbaums but they’re all well done.

Odd,I loved “Being There” and I walked out on “The Twelve Chairs.” De gustibus…

Snarp's avatar

@pdworkin I can actually see that. I wasn’t sure about The Twelve Chairs at first, it took a while to get into. It definitely wasn’t what I expected.

“Two for the Road” with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney—a wonderful film about the ups and downs of love and marriage.

Time Bandits is not very well known but it stars some big names like John Cleese, David Rappaport, Ian Holm and Sean Connery, and it’s probably more age-appropriate than The 40 Year Old Virgin for a 14 year old. It’s a fun comedic-adventure story.

frdelrosario's avatar

“The Shop Around the Corner” with James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan. It’s set at Christmas, but it’s worth watching year-round.

“The Aristocrats” is one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, but it’s not a comedy. It’s a documentary about the history and telling of one joke. The joke itself can be outrageously stupid.

“Get Smart” was pretty cool..
“Live Free or Die Hard”

I’d say “The Invention Of Lying”.

“Office Space” is hilarious, and “Take the Money and Run” is a great Woody Allen film.
“Funny People” is also a good one. Adam Sandler is in it, but he’s much more… mature, I guess, than his past roles.

Ruthless People
Manhattan
Team America: World Police
Dr. Strangelove
Some Like It Hot
Juno

and for really smart comedy, the TV show SportsNight

Office Space is really one of the funniest movies I’ve seen in a long time. Also, Spinal Tap, like mentioned above also gets my vote.

The original Death At A Funeral

The Pink Panther Strikes Again

Airplane (When you watch it you realize how they took absolutely every opportunity for puns and joke, like no one had before)
