What's the easiest way to download Youtube videos as a mp3?

Asked by Bugabear (1712points) January 16th, 2010

The way I do it is I download the video as a mp4 than convert it to an mp3. Then I have to add the tags and other bits. After I have to add it to iTunes. There has got to be an easier way.

vixy.net used to work for me.

Thanks but it says Error: URL resolve error. (YouTube.com is down??). Which has been happening for all the ones I try.

Oooooh weird. Youtube has been doing a lot of site maintenance… Maybe they’ve found ways to block those sites?

I use Firefox, and there are plenty of add-ons to help with it. I use DownloadHelper to get the videos as .flv files, and if I want the mp3 from it then I use Audacity to record the sound from the video into mp3.

The .flv file can be played as a video using Zoom Player. Alternate link.

The mp4 files do not contain metadata (ID3 tags) so you will still have to add it yourself. You have found the easiest way.

I would love to be proven wrong here. Long story short, use copy and paste to fill in the ID3 info. And be glad you you don’t have to do what I did when I was a kid. I would wait for my dad to get drunk and pass out then I would steal money from his wallet. Then I had to take the bus to the mall and buy the actual tape.

This always works, I use it all the time, and is by far the fastest.

@johnpowell is right, the youtube videos don’t come with song information. This is mostly because youtube is not meant to be a source for downloading music.

If you want to download lots of songs, particularly whole albums, there are countless (both legal and illegal) other places out there on the web.

If the songs you want to download are not commercially available, try getting in contact with the video poster and asking them to send you an mp3 version.

Yeah. I know that downloaded YouTube videos dont have tag. I just wanted to make it seem like I had to do more work. Because saying I download the mp4 then convert it doesnt seem that bad in print. @XOIIO vidtomp3 doesnt work for me either. Works now for some reason. And @FireMadeFlesh I’m running the beta of Firefox so Add-on wont work for me.

Thanks everyone. lurve
